About James

My guitar lessons aren't meant to milk you week to week. i like to teach guitarists what they need to level up and expand their capabilities. I don't believe in making people play note for note translations of songs. Did SRV play Hendrix songs his way or note for note? Did Hendrix play cover Dylan note for note, or did he take a good song and make it way better? That's what I think is important in learing guitar and what I use to teach. Plenty of theory if that's what you need. I don't know everything, but I can teach you something.

People just ask me, can you please teach me guitar. I always say yes. If someone is willing to put in the effort I am willing to teach them.

I'm a gigging musician who's been in multiple bands. I've played guitar in some amazing places for all kinds of amazing people. I've taught many people over the years and I enjoy unlocking knowledge for people. I also often learn things from students. Not everyone can know everything, but I've failed enough times to help guide even already good guitarists.

About the lesson

I like to know what the goals of the student are, the songs they want to learn, and I listen to them play. A big part of learning guitar is muscle memory. I teach exercises that help in developing coordination, and I like to teach by learning songs.

People of every age and level.

You can learn something from any guitar teacher, but if your instructor isn't leading you where you want to go and is just teaching you stuff that doesn't matter to you, then you should probably find another guitar teacher. Music is best when you are the best you. Lol. That sounds so new age-y, but it's absolutly true. Your teacher needs to help you find who you are and not making a clone.

I have a nice PA system and ran a show for this great father/son band. It's a good feeling making a band sound great. There's a big difference between just doing something and putting your art and love into it.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
You should be able to know if a teacher can teach you the style of music you want to learn. You should be able to ask if the instructor can teach you the songs you want to learn. You really should be able to ask any questions you want to with a guitar teacher. We get asked the craziest questions at gigs, don't feel bad about asking anything if you want to learn.
