About Ferdad

I'm a high school math teacher who also plays acoustic and electric guitar. I have been playing guitar for about 30 years. I can help beginning guitar players with basic technique, reading guitar tablature, and training one's ears to figure out how to play songs. I have many guitar pedals for students who are interested in learning about effects such as distortion, fuzz, delay, reverb, modulation, etc.

I'm also available for tutoring high school, middle school, and some college level mathematics as well as statistics.

I enjoy helping students get a better understanding of math concepts, strengthen existing skills, and learn new skills. I also encourage students to develop a love for learning in general. I enjoy playing guitar and exploring effects pedals, so I try to combine math with music when possible.

I teach high school math. I thought about getting a master's in counseling after my BA in Psychology, but then decided to pursue a teaching career in math. I play guitar on the side. I am interested in guitar pedals and have been collecting different types of pedals and experimenting with them.

I have a BA in Psychology and an MA in Secondary Education with certification in Math. I have experience teaching math and this has given me practice with explaining concepts to students. My experience with guitar is that I have played electric and acoutic guitar for around 30 years. I took lessons for a few years and once I learned the basics, I then independently studied guitar by listening to songs and playing along with them. I took 4 semesters of sitar at University of Pennsylvania from 1997 to 1998.

About the lesson

I would start by determining how much the student knows about playing guitar with respect to technique and basic chords and notes. I would check understanding of how to use both the right hand and left hand and how to tune the guitar. I would discuss the goals of the student - does the student want to learn how to play specific songs or how to get better at playing guitar in general? I would need to determine incoming knowledge and ability first, then go from there.

For math, I would try to determine existing skills and knowledge in order to figure out where to start. We might need to review some prerequisite skills before addressing the current content.

I have been teaching high school math for the last 7 years. I taught adults part-time from 2002 to 2005. I tutored high school and college students as well.

You should find out how long that teacher has been playing guitar and what experience he/she has. You can use your first lesson to get a sense of how he/she teaches and then determine if you want to continue learning from him/her.

I had a student with a math learning disorder who struggled with even the most basic algebra concepts; however, she was able to pass the course with a B because she was willing to ask questions and get help from me. I had other students who struggled but chose not to try and ended up failing. This student would ask me questions for every classwork/homework assignment so that her scores for assignments offset her low assessment scores. I was happy to see that instead of giving up, this student worked hard and asked questions so she ended up doing well for the course.
