About Greg

I attended the UNCG School of Music in Greensboro, North Carolina and have taught guitar and bass locally for over 20 years. I've been teaching beginner ukulele after tutoring students on it last year at my children's school.

I was a member of the UNCG Jazz Ensemble and Greensboro Jazz Band. During my time at UNCG I studied both classical and jazz guitar. Whether someone wants to start at the very beginning and learn to read music, learn tabs, brush up on their chops or learn a specific song for an audition or performance, I direct the lessons specific to the students need. Teaching music to anyone requires patience. I understand that each student is unique and that their learning style is going to be unique. As a parent and a musician, I teach each student in a way that speaks to them and let’s them have fun in the process. I encourage the students to use their own style of music for learning to further connect them to learning. I enjoy seeing the student have a feeling of accomplishment as they make progress in learning to play.

I knew someone that worked at a music shop and I thought how great it would be to share my love of music and knowledge of guitar with people wanting to learn how to play the guitar or bass.

I attended the UNCG School of Music in Greensboro, North Carolina and have taught guitar and bass locally for over 20 years. I was a member of the UNCG Jazz Ensemble and Greensboro Jazz Band. During my time at UNCG I studied both classical and jazz guitar with Mark Mazzatenta and Dr. John Salmon. I also attended a Master Class with Al Di Meola. Notable musicians I was fortunate enough to spend time with and who impacted me at UNCG were Jazz great Herb Ellis and the L.A. Guitar Quartet.I have played in many local bands (covers and original bands) and opened for a handful of National artists.

About the lesson

The first lesson is getting to know the student and where they are in their abilities. Each student is different and I cater to their individual needs. Whether it’s learning how to read music, finger picking, brushing up on riffs, theory, learning songs or starting from the very beginning, I teach every aspect of the instrument.

I have had students from 6 years old to 87 years young. I have taught beginners that have never touched a guitar and students that have gone on to attend Performing Arts schools in the triad area.

It is good to have an idea of what you want to learn and that you feel comfortable with your instructor.

A couple of my students recently learned a few songs and played them at a retirement center. I also had a previous student come home from college and reach out to me, wanting to get together, catch up and just jam. Moments like that are priceless.
