About John
It’s true that extracurriculars like music may be seen as a low priority but in these uncertain times, but music can soothe the soul and uplift the spirit. Here's how:
Rule #1 is to have fun. The guitar can be a lot of fun to learn and to play. I work hard to facilitate a learning environment where students of all ages feel safe in taking risks in their learning. My pedagogy is student-centered with as much hands-on as soon as possible. In addition, I teach supportively and my critiques are constructive yet honest, and aimed toward addressing my students' learning needs to ensure long-term enjoyment and success.
As a profound believer that musicians should contribute to the community, I play jazz, blues, rock, and more in open mics and in benefit shows. I formerly served as the volunteer chapter coordinator for Guitars For Vets, a national nonprofit organization providing free guitar lessons for veterans afflicted with PTSD and other distress at the Lyons and West Orange VA New Jersey Health Care Systems.
I'm a proud magna cum laude member of the Berklee College of Music Class of 2021. I also hold a master's in education from Rutgers University with 15 years' experience in classroom and online teaching.
All lessons are available online using Zoom, Whereby, or Skype, and Zelle for fee payment. You’ll need a tablet or a laptop with a camera and audio capability (which almost all of them have). Cell phones aren’t recommended because of their small screens.
I’ll send you login information beforehand that includes a link to the session, and we’ll be on our way. Sorry to say I'm not available on weeknights nor weekends. I reserve them for rehersals and performances.

I combine my passions for teaching and music in my teaching. I model how discovering the guitar and music can be a journey of self-discovery and joy, and how fun and cool playing music can be.
I'm studying for a bachelor's from the Berklee College of Music online, with my degree requirements to be met in Dec. 2020. I also have an M.Ed in learning and teaching from Rutgers.
Experience wise, I've played the guitar for nearly 40 years and play jazz standards, blues classic, 60s and 70s rock and roll, oldies, country and Celtic.
Also, I've led several bands that enjoyed modest but solid success and have a passion for music and for teaching.

The first meeting is a getting-to-know-you session as well as an evaluation. I ask what types of music students like and may want to learn, what their favorite artists and songs are, and why they chose the guitar or ukulele in the first place. I also like to see how much previous experience with the instrument and music they have; I like to tailor lessons to their learning styles and needs and adapt to meet them as needed. I emphasize hands-on as soon as possible and that Rule #1 is to enjoy the instrument and the music.

John has been teaching my son for one year now - he started at age 6. John is very patient and positive and makes lessons fun for the young student while teaching all of the fundamentals of reading music and playing the guitar. My son always looks forward to his weekly lesson!
