About Ryan

I teach students with the assumption that they can go as far as they want to go with their music. I believe strongly in teaching a broad understanding of music that enables a student to not only play songs they like, but write songs and perform songs as well. I emphasize playing by ear and playing with others. I feel the latter especially is vital to help students stick with it when they might feel like giving up.

I love when students finally have breakthroughs in their learning and make connections that help take their skills to the next level. I love how music can positively impact so many other areas of life, such as relational, emotional, and mental health.

I've had a passion for music and audio since I began recording on my 2-track Tascam recorder as a high school student, though my journey as a musician began as an elementary age student when I started taking drum lessons in the fourth grade. I love the process of creating music and taking a song idea from a simple melody or lyric to a fully developed song. It is a process I love to teach and share with others.

I completed coursework in commercial music at Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, TN. There I studied jazz, blues, and worship guitar techniques and studied songwriting and music theory. I have a certificate from the Recording Connection for their Audio Engineering program, which involved being mentored by a recording engineer and learning recording techniques and principles of audio. I also took about 8 years of private drum lessons as a youth.

About the lesson

I welcome any prospective student to come by my home studio before enrolling in lessons to meet me and get comfortable with the space. I provide a registration form which must be filled out, simply to provide contact info and some basic information about the student's interests. Once I receive the completed registration I create a login for the family on my student portal, which offers families a way to communicate, pay invoices online, track practice time, and receive files like sheet music I want to share. Once the student begins taking lessons, I generally try to get to know them a bit and find out what their goals are, if they're able to articulate them. I want to cater lessons to the needs of the individual student, so while there are common themes throughout my lessons, the way I communicate them may differ depending on the personality of the student. It can take time to develop a relationship with the student, but I feel that developing trust and respect is an important part of the student-teacher relationship.

I have worked with students ranging from 6 years old all the way through adult. I particularly enjoy working with middle school and high school students. Having developed a love of music as the drummer of a youth worship band at the age of 13, I find myself particularly drawn to this age group. I am also the father of a 5 year old so I understand communicating with young children.

Details

A typical 30 minute lesson is $25 with payment being collected month-to-month. Participation in groups ranges from $20-30/month and is available to students who have reached a basic level of proficiency on their instrument. I also provide rentals for guitar at $20-30/month, which means my students can take lessons with a quality instrument for about the same cost or less that some studios charge for lessons alone.
