You don't become awesome at guitar by rehearsing boring chords and scales. You become awesome by playing music!! You will learn the details along the way. Keys, Scales, Modes, Chords, Music Theory... All of these mountains are easier to climb by learning songs, riffs, or licks FIRST then learning the details.

If it's not fun, why even bother?

I started playing guitar at the same time as a lot of my friends. The difference was that I practiced more, read more, learned more, so I was always the guy that was just a little bit ahead of everyone else so we'd be jamming together and sometimes they'd go "Whoa! Show me how you did that!" So I would.

Then as I got older and played in bands I did most of the writing when it came to the music so I would have to teach the other guitar player and bass player what I was doing and when it comes to progressive metal that can be really difficult if you don't know your theory and stuff.

I love it though!

I've been a professional musician in several different successful bands spanning over 20 years in different genres that range from extreme progressive metal to good ol' classic rock and country. Have played both rhythm and lead and have even been signed to record labels and toured the country a few times.

About the lesson

First come the basics. How to hold a pick, where to place your hands and fingers, etc. I also like to understand what kind of music you like or guitarists you admire because that will play a big role in getting the sound and techniques you want to develop!

For example, even though they are both in Metallica, there's a big difference between the way James Hetfield plays and the way Kirk Hammett plays. Both of them are entirely different from the way Eric Clapton and Synister Gates play.

Figuring out what kind of guitarist you want to be is a good first step. Even if it changes every month or you love 20 different guitarists. That's awesome! Just that many more tricks you'll have in your bag

All kinds! From absolute beginners that have never held a pick before to people that can shred and sweep with the best of them but might want a fresh idea or a different way to approach something.
That's another thing I love about it, is if you want, you can keep learning forever if you want but you don't have to.

A lot of great songwriters built entire careers with nothing more than a handful of simple chords. Then there are other guys that want to see how deep the rabbit hole goes!

It's easy. You've got to find a person that you mesh with, someone that understands where you want to go and has the chops to get you there.

I took a handful of lessons early on with a few different teachers and none of them was teaching me things I wanted to learn. One of them refused to allow me to use anything but a clean tone during lessons....but i wanted to learn METAL!! I NEED DISTORTION!! lol So why would I keep taking lessons about things I had no interest in learning?

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
--Who are your favorite bands/guitarists?

I feel like this is the most importnat and most overlooked question. You can't get there if you don't know where you're going.

--What gear do I need?

This one I'd be more than happy to help with! It matters a lot more than people think. If you want to be the next Van Halen it's gonna be a lot harder with an acoustic guitar instead of an electric right?

And vice-versa. If you want to play pop or country, you'll need different gear which again goes right back to question 1.

Even the type of strings and types of picks you use make a big difference depending on what style/techniques you're playing.
