About Gabrielle

The versitality I posess as a teacher evolves from my background in music performance and recording arts with guitar, bass, drums, keyboard, and vocals. I have experience volunteering as a Band Coach and Guitar Instructor with the Miami Girls Rock Camp, as well as a Conservatory Teaching Assistant in Sound Desing and Music Production at UNCSA's 2018 Summer Intensive Program, where I educated several hundred high schoolers in audio recording, editing, and producing methods.

What I enjoy most about the work I do in filmmaking, music production, and instrument instruction is the collaborative nature of these processes. I find myself learning lessons in the relationships I build with my students. To see someone excite and suprise themselves from the lessons they have learned on my behalf is the ultimate reward here. While teaching a body of students is about a consisten lessonplan, it is the contributions of each individual's interests and desires that shape the course of a class. We each carry our own pearls, and it is up to a teacher to listen to their students as much as the student listens to the teacher's lesson in order to bring out the best in eachother through our gifts.

I started teaching audio engineering and private guitar lessons several years ago when I moved to North Carolina to study filmmaking at UNCSA. The past four years, I'd give lessons both in NC and back home in Miami, where I volunteer as a Band Coach and Guitar Instructor with the Miami Girls Rock Camp. I love working with young people, teaching others how to enjoy listening to music by learning more about it, and lending insight to anyone curious about audio recording arts and sound design!

Have experience teaching a variety of age groups in songwriting, guitar instruction and editorial software techniques. As a Teaching Assistant with UNCSA's Summer Intensive program of 2017, I worked closely with sixty-three high school students for six weeks, conducting masterclasses in editing technique using Adobe Premiere and AVID Pro Tools as well as traditional Foley-studio recording methods. More recently I volunteered as a teacher with Miami Girls Rock Camp. MGRC is a rock camp workshop utilizing music and performance as a platform to promote self-esteem, a sense of community, and free creative expression for girls and gender nonconforming youth of Miami, FL. Frequently volunteer with MGRC as an Instrument Instructor, Band Coach, and Videographer.

About the lesson

I prefer to first understand a student's personal interest in music listening or any playing capabilities. Ear training is as important as theory, so learning how to listen to a student is part of providing the lesson. When a lesson becomes a task or a chore, it is no longer an enjoyable experience. However when a student is encouraged to learn more about the music that interests them, their ear can ultimatley lead them into adapting music lessons as a pleasurable and rewarding experience. From learning the patterns of a pentatonic scale on a guitar's fretboard to familiarizing oneself with the shapes that make a chord, all these teachings are tools gifted to students to allow them to discover their own "sound."

Through MGRC I have worked with youngsters age 7 to 17, teaching them methods of playing guitar and how to write music together in their self-formed bands. With UNCSA I was lucky to lend my knowledge of Sound Editing and Recording Arts with high school students age 15 to 18, teaching them how to use AVID Pro-Tools, Garageband, and Adobe Audition to bring their own stories to life.

My advice to any student would be to feel comfortable with knowing they can choose to finding the "right" teacher. It took me many years to learn theory, while some of the teachers lent parts of themselves within their lessons that stay with me still today. I'm still learning new lessons every day, and I hope to learn more about ways of thinking through conversation with students reather than a one-sided dynamic. We all carry our own gifts, interests, and desires as individuals.

I recently worked with MGRC's new XLR program, which focuses on lending the volunteer songwriting and instrument instruction workshops to an older demographic community, age 21 and up! This was a special experience for me as it was more of a challenge than teaching the yougsters in the camp's traditional format. Educating women of all ages on how to pick up a new hobby, or love affair through an instrument of their choice was truly enlightening and fufilling.

Are there any songs that I've tried to learn by ear, or a tune I've always wanted to learn how to play? Why do I listen to these artists? What influences shaped the sound of my favorite artists' songs in their writing or structure? Does anyone in my family or group of friends also play a musical instrument?

My standard pricing is $50.00 every half hour for music lessons that range from a beginners lesson in picking up guitar, to breakdowns in modal theory and rhythmic studies found in multimple musical genres (jazz, blues, rock, pop, r&b, punk, country).
