About Jerry
Knowledge and experience can be gained by anyone willing to put in the time. My friendly and personable nature combine with my ability to really understand the students needs and wants. This creates a fun and educational learning environment that truly invites learning.
The joy of passing along all the knowledge and experience I have is immeasurable. I love, and live for, the "light bulb" moment when a student "gets it"!
One day someone asked me to show them how to play something. I realized then that I love sharing my knowledge.
I played Clarinet and Bass Clarinet from 7 grade through college in concert band. I marched the Tuba for 2 years in college while I was a Music Performance major on Upright Bass and playing with the Valdosta Symphony Orchestra. I started playing guitar in 8th grade. I played guitar for U.S. Marine Corps in the 2nd Marine Division Band from 1996-1999. I have played guitar and bass around Jacksonville, Fl. for over 20 years. I am also a USCCA certified Training Counselor and an NRA certified instructor and Chief Range Safety Officer.

I like learn a little about them and let them learn about me. It creates a more personal type of connection. I want to know what their expectations are of me. I also want to know what their expectations are of the instrument. Letting them know what I expect is also a very important part of the discussion. The student has chosen to give me their time and hard-earned money. That, to me, is a huge compliment and is not to be taken lightly.
I have taught students from 6 years old all the way 60-somethings. I have also taught students of every skill level.
Never be afraid or too proud to learn something from anyone of any skill level. I learn things from my students. Music is not a competition! Also, learn different styles and genres than what you already know. Being a well rounded musician takes time and effort but will pay off massively down the road I promise.
A students parent emailed me and asked for a progress report on her son. I wrote a reply to the email that was quite legthy but detailed. She replied back to me and was very happy with what I had to say. During her sons next lesson he gave me more details about what transpired. She had read the email and was so proud of her son she had him read it back to her so he would know as well. The look on his face when he shared the story to me was amazing!
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
The student should be honest with themselves about how much time they can devote to learning. As long as they know going in, and can communicate the expectation to the teacher, then all will be well.
They should also have a clear goal of what they want to accomplish. "I want to play 'X' instrument" is a very open ended statement. "I want to play like 'X' musician" narrows it down quite a bit and is a great starting point to grow from.
