About David
Welcome to the Guitar Institute
A division of Swampsong, LLC
My name is David Malmberg, Ph.D and I teach classical/fingerstyle guitar. Years ago I found myself in Spain and was introduced to the guitar through the mentoring of America Martinez Serrano, Doctor of Guitar at the Conservatory of Music in Sevilla. It was through her tutelage that I received the foundation of my guitar technique.
For the past 25 years I have devoted myself to teaching and playing. Since those early days, the guitar has carried me through many different forms of music resulting in the recording of 12 Cd's, from pop to classical with radio airplay throughout the country and the world. (Apple music, Spotify, Pandora etc)
My devotion to teaching is a result of wanting to pass on to others the joy the guitar has given me through the years. My private studio is located in Richfield, Mn. Contact me and we can talk about your musical needs and set up some times to meet.
My training as a guitarist has its origins in Spain. My studies were with America Martinez Serrano, Doctor of Guitar at the Conservatory of Music in Sevilla and with Madrid Flamenco guitarist Oscar Herrero. My styles of playing goes from classical to flamenco from folk to pop.
Academically I hold a Master's degree in Music and a PhD in Philosophy from Calamus International University in London, UK.

The process of learning to play guitar is an evolution. It is a combination of study and tutoring. Naturally, the goals of the student are seriously taken into consideration. Those goals can be diverse, from simply enjoying the guitar to wanting to be a virtuoso on the instrument and everything in between. Bottom line: It should be and must be an ongoing enjoyable experience.

One of the things that makes Dave an exceptional teacher, I think, is that he has a wide breadth of musical knowledge and experience. While he is Classical Guitar expert, he understands and is well versed in Jazz, Rock, Folk and Flamenco. This is particularly helpful for me and my studies, as the music I’m playing walks into the Jazz, Classical, and Spanish worlds simultaneously. I would not be able to play as well as I am at the moment if it weren’t for his ability to be fluid with those particular musical styles, his ability to read and clearly communicate the music that is on the page, and his patient and disciplined approach to technique.
It's been 3+ years I'm taking classes with David for Classical & Flamenco guitar. I would definitely recommend him, as he is very patienceful and encouraging all the time. His way of teaching is very systematized (practice the scale, to open up fingers, learning basic techniques, learn full pieces, learn multiple pieces, learn advance techniques, learn pieces combining multiple advance techniques, ear training, etc). Practicing and proofing basics to advance stuff, and different kind of techniques. He is very through in explaining music in different ways, never rushes you, and try to correct you, but not disturb you (Thumb behind the neck Manu). Mastering guitar is not easy, but its fairly easy & fun if you have an instructor like David, who encourage you to do what you want to do while giving you the right direction. I had so much fun learning with him :) Thanks
My previous experience with a guitar was playing folk songs using simple chords. Mr. Malmberg introduced me to classical guitar music and I have enjoyed learning many classical pieces under his instruction. He is firm about me practicing. He explains the pieces in great detail. He corrects my finger placement on the strings before I practice incorrectly. Mr. Malmberg finds classical pieces I might enjoy and is spot in with those choices. Any student, young or old, would enjoy learning any type of guitar music under Mr. Malmberg's tutelage.
