About Julia

People have so many reasons for wanting to play and I enjoy helping them get started and/or problem-solving with a particular issue. It is satisfying to see someone conquer a hurdle and then reach a point of adapting to the instrument like second nature.

I am a professional guitarist, composer and the author of My First Guitar: Tales of True Love and Lost Chords with over 70 Legendary Musicians (ECW Press). I've been teaching privately and as a guest artist for over 15 years. I have two recorded albums, "Smoke & Steel" and "Empire of Light," which have been featured on National Public Radio. I enjoy teaching music because it gives a student a way to connect with others and/or to relax at the end of a day--to play music is calming and rejuvenating, a different way of using the mind.

I've been teaching guitar for over 15 years. It's something that I enjoy doing.

I am a professional guitarist, composer, music journalist and the author of My First Guitar: Tales of True Love and Lost Chords with 70 Legendary Artists, a book that features interviews with many of guitar's best players who tell their stories of how they obtained their start on the instrument.

About the lesson

I learn from the student why it is they are interested in learning to play the guitar and what their immediate goals are. From there, I help them get started in creating lessons that are tailored to encourage and inspire students. I believe that guitar lessons should be enjoyable because playing music is both social as well as a particularly calming way to unwind at the end of the day, something you can do for yourself that feels satisfying. It's a skill that one carries for a lifetime. I am also particularly aware, as a teacher, of all the challenges that a new student faces with adapting to the instrument.

I've worked with a range of students, from very young up through students who worried "they were too old" to learn. I have also helped coach students to prepare for auditions and job placement, where they've succeeded.

What makes me happy is when a student starts barreling ahead enthusiastically with their playing because they feel they are getting a grasp of the instrument.

This isn't entirely recent but I am fond of this interview I did with the 2008 Nobel Prize in Chemistry winner, who speaks of how learning to play the guitar leads to discovery: (concealed information)

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
If you find that one thing it is that you love doing, you'll find yourself doing it out of joy and, as a result, you'll be achieving your best work. Do consider how much time you have to devote to learning an instrument and how much time your schedule permits for playing the guitar on your own. I've noticed that the speediest learners are those who can't wait to sit down with their guitars because they are determined and excited about getting a particular song or piece under their fingers with confidence. And the slowest learners tend to be those who feel overburdened by their full schedules so spending time with their guitars is the last thing they can manage, even though they do want to learn. It's not just guitar but the more time you devote to doing any one thing, it comes easier!
