About John
I teach my students how to play “songs” not scales... I do my best to keep the passion growing for the instrument. I can be daunting at times, I know so I’m very patient with my students and provide essential communication that makes it easier to follow and understand what it is that I’m trying to teach. I think that’s most important. Repitition is everything, once you do it so many times it becomes natural, then you are ablevto do it without even thinking about it.
I also perform with my band Wild Card Rumble as not only the rhythm player, but also the lead singer. (We actually just played last week at the World of Wheels downtown Rosemont) I think that also gives me a better understanding of rhythm and music in general as I’m able to do both things at once. If you’re a beginner, I highly suggest learning to do both as soon as you can. It really makes for a more awesome experience if you’re able to do so.
When I hear a student play something... anything for that matter that I’ve taught them, I feel like I’ve accomplished something. Even in my own band when I’ve helped someone with a particular riff, I feel just that much more accomplished as a musician.
I’ve taken many guitar lessons myself, and taught myself after that. I’ve also been performing in my band Wild Card Rumble for three years now as their lead singer and rhythm player.

I generally start with the basics... what is a “guitar”, how to hold a guitar, how to hold a guitar pick. I move on then to how to strum the strings on a guitar. From there we go on to reading guitar tablature and an easy song, while at the same time learning a few scales to increase speed on the instrument. Next, I like to teach a song that’s a bit more complicated, while at the same time breaking it down into its individual parts, while also still teaching more complicated scales.
