About Adam

I customize lesson plans to meet my student's goals. I find out what they want to achieve and work with them to meet those aspirations.

It's really satifying to see someone become more proficient and enjoy making music.

My father is a noted musician, instructor and founder of Homespun Music Instruction in Woodstock, NY, so I came up in the music business. I do production work for Homespun and have several titles.

I had a few students on the side while I was in my first career as a freelance photojournalist to bring in a few extra bucks and then it grew into a full-time job working as a teacher and working musician.

After a few years of piano from 8-11 years old I picked up the guitar and learned folk, blues and rock styles. I later studied jazz guitar at Ithaca College from 1986-89 as an elective and later resumed jazz studies with Patrick Greene in San Francisco for three years. While I wouldn't consider myself a jazz guitarist studying that genre deeped my understanding of music.

Since then I've studied mandolin, ukulele and lap steel. I am comfortable in many styles from folk and blues to rock. While I've taught classic rock, hard rock and metal aren't in my wheelhouse.

About the lesson

I ask what long and short-term goals they have then assess their level. Once I know where they are skill-wise I can pull together teaching materials.

I try and strike a balance between teaching material that is accessible and challenging.

All ages and levels.

Find someone that you are comfortable with and who you can relate to. All music teachers have slightly different approaches so find one that works for you.

I have a former student who was twelve years old when I started with him and I worked with him weekly through high school. He went to college and reached out to me to share some of his new work and I was blown away. It was a really proud moment for me.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Think about your goals and whether they are attainable. It's also important to make sure you understand the time involved in learning an instrument. At the end of the day you get out of it what you put in.

Details

$50 per hour in-call and $60 per hour out-call. $35 per half-hour and $45 per half-hour outcall. Internet learning is the same as in-call.
