About Tyler

(My roster is currently full, and I'm not enrolling new students at this time.)

My name is Tyler Larson. I've been playing the piano and performing for almost 25 years. I've been teaching for 15 years. I'm classically trained. Despite being classically trained, my one-man piano and vocal performances are primarily pop and rock centric (think dueling pianos, but only one guy playing the piano).

My ultimate goal is for my students to embrace their skills on the instrument and claim it as their own as fast as possible. After embracing their craft as their own, they begin to enjoy practicing and strive to share what they are learning by performing songs for others.

My teaching method is structured around reading music, posture, technique, metronome work, identifying chord patterns, putting together melodies and chord structures by ear, writing songs, and performance.

My expectation with my students is that they practice for a solid 30 minutes each day. Our 30-45 minutes together will be broken down into segments of performing assigned pieces, working through new concepts, assigning new work, and many opportunities to ask and answer questions along the way.

I love watching the process of new musicians making new connections as they grow in their skills. There's a tipping point that happens when a student first realizes they have all of the tools to start learning songs that THEY want to play -and they come to their lessons with their assignments done PLUS an unassigned random project that they chose during the middle of the week.

I love music, I love entertaining, and I have a knack for connecting with people of all ages. The three of those things really make me feel alive. The combination of those things make "The Music" for me. I started teaching because I want to pass "The Music" on to others.

I have 15 years of experience with teaching music. I also have a roster of success stories of students who are flourishing in their craft.

I like to do a consultation with students and parents to answer any questions that either may have. This consultation allows them to get to know me and my personality -and it allows me to get a feel for (when working with children) how parents and children interact. Parental support and guidance are crucial to keeping kids accountable and on track to being successful at learning a new instrument.

My youngest was four

My oldest was about fifty-five

Look for a teacher that interacts with children like they are adults -and not like kids. Children are capable of learning a LOT in a short amount of time when they feel like a mutual respect is coming from an adult that is interacting with them.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Student (child or not): Are you willing to give 30 minutes/day to this commitment?

Parents: Burnout is the number one reason why most students quit.  Are you willing to encourage your child by commiting to 30 minutes/day and not overcommiting them while they are taking piano lessons (ex. playing more than one sport at a time, or attempting to learn other instruments for the first two years of their piano experience)?
