About Sophia

Although I'm a senior in high school, I've played harp since I was 6 years old, meaning for about 10 years now! When I was living in Hong Kong, I was mentored by Ms. Dan Yu, the 2001 USA International Harp Competition Gold Medal Winner. During my early years of playing, I've performed all across HK for many different occasions. I received my Associated Board of the Royal School of Music (ABRSM) Grade 3 Distinction at age 7. Then went on to receive the ABRSM Grade 5 Merit at age 9. In 2010, she was awarded the Silver Medal in the Primary Pedal Division of the First Hong Kong Harp Competition. Finally, I received my ABRSM Grade 8 Distinction (highest level of the ABRSM system) when I was 11.

I have participated in numerous local and international competitions and events. I have also played for many occasions to raise awareness for charities and causes, as well as to advertise for the harp as an instrument. I have also taken master-classes from famous harpists worldwide, including Susann McDonald, Isabella Perrin, Jana Bouskova, Florence Sitruk, Lynne Aspnes, Jason Chang, Zhou Jie, and Wong Li Yar. I was involved in a harp ensemble for several years as well.

When I moved to Arizona, I started and have still been playing for hospitals, elderly homes, and children's homes. I've also played for weddings and various events as well since then. In 2014, I became the first harpist of my school’s symphonic orchestra. Then in 2016, I won First Place in the Young Artist Recital organized by the American Harp Society. And after 4 long years of hard work, I earned my Level 4 Diploma in Musical Performance - Harp Recital - with Distinction, and have become an Associate of Trinity College London (ATCL). Nowadays, I dedicate most of my time to teaching underpriviledged youth how to play harp and serving as the first harpist of the Orquesta Juvenil as a volunteer teacher for Harmony Project Phoenix.

Having worked with both kids and the elderly, I communicate effectively with people of all ages. My love for harp has been apparent ever since I laid my fingers on the harp strings when I was 6 years old. I would love to be able to teach you about the wonderful art of harp music and develop and share in your passion! Together, I will make sure that our time together is both productive and fun. And although I will be teaching you, I know I will be learning a lot of from as well!

I actually just got into paid teaching! After exploring solo harp for the past 10 years, I've decided to share my talents someplace else. Since I love working and mentoring others, I figured teaching would be the best thing for me! So the first thing I dove into was volunteer teaching for Harmony Project PHX and now, I'd like to expand my teaching network!

When I was involved with my ensemble group, I often mentored all of the other group members. I also have played at hospitals, elderly homes, as well as children's homes, making me capable of communicating with all ages! Most importnatly, I have also received training to become a volunteer teaching teaching harp for Harmony Project PHX.

About the lesson

First, getting to know who they are and what they like. Then, sitting them down and asking them what they want to accomplish. Come up with a short term goal and a long term goal so we get a sense of what needs to be done!

I have worked with my ensemble group by mentoring them. I've also on-the-side taught some of my classmates at school! I am also a volunteer teacher for young, underpriviledged harpists at Harmony Project PHX.

Always love what you do. And as famous harpist, Carlos Salzedo, once said: "You have to work like an devil to play like an angel".

I bonded with a little girl who had cancer when I played at the hospital by teaching her basic chords on the harp.
