About Jake

I have always enjoyed teaching others. In my academic career, I have felt my classes came fairly easy to me for the most part. However, my favorite and most effective way of studying was to teach others the material. This really showed me if I understood the material or not. For all of my classes, I studied until I was able to teach the material to somebody so that they fully understand it. I've participated in many study groups too. This allowed me an opportunity to teach others in my class, but also allow them to teach me too. This was helpful because I got to learn different ways to communicate various topics.

Outside of academics, I was the President of my school's Powerlifting Club. A big part of my job was to teach the new lifters proper form, nutrition guidelines, and how to overcome mental obstacles. I believe that there is lots of overlap between learning a topic such as Psychology and learning how to lift weights.

I graduated from the University of Delaware in December 2018 with an Honors degree in Psychology. I can confidently say I've learned how to effectively study for Psychology classes. The classes I've taken are Intro to Psychology, Research Methods, Measurement and Statistics, Brain and Behavior, Cognition, Psychopathology, Social Psychology, Religion and Psychology, Applied Behavior Analysis, Advanced Health Psychology, and Human Computer Interaction. I am confident to teach in any of these topics.

I was an Entrepreneurial Studies Minor at UD. I took classes such as Business Basics for Entrepreneurs, Startup the Professional You, Intro to Entrepreneurship, Entrepreneurial Marketing, Business Accelerator for Entrepreneurs, and Startup Experience I and II. These courses offered me a background of entrepreneurship. Specifically the Startup Experience classes allowed me to get hands on experience creating a startup. In one startup we researched and pitched an idea on how to improve employee engagement in the workplace. The other startup experience was related to my own business that I ran for 6+ years. I had a business selling on Amazon.com using their FBA service. I bought electronics such as video games, cameras, headphones and much more from used electronics dealers and resold them for a profit on Amazon.com and eBay.com. Additionally, I got into buying new beauty products from wholesalers and reselling those on Amazon.com.

I have experience working on Chegg.com with their tutoring service. Typcially they reach out on their Opportunities board and I respond to the questions I am confident I can answer. I reach out to them and find a time that works for both of us and then put that into my schedule!

I've worked with undergraduate college students, high school students, and adults returning to higher education.

Look for somebody who is a good communicator. A tutor/teacher can be really knowledgable on a topic, but if they can't communicate their knowledge then that knowledge isn't effective.

A recent tutoring event I was proud of is with a woman named Taylor. She originally reached out to me asking me to do her assignment for her. I explained to her that that is against my tutoring honor code and I would like her to learn from my tutoring. She agreed with my point and I began to help her with her assignment. I taught her my logic behind how I would help her with this assignment and guided her through it allowing her to do the work. It brings me joy to help students realize their potential.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
The student should ask themselves if they gave the assignment an honest effort. They should also come up with a list of specific questions so that they can be prepared for the tutoring session so that time isn't wasted.
