About Rachel

I've always had a passion for learning new things, and have recently found that my knowledge and skills can also be of value to other people. One of my loves is languages, and especially with the rising global interest towards Korea, I wanted to share my knowledge and love of the Korean language and culture.

Though I was born and lived all my life in the States, Korean has been close to my first language because I consistently spoke it, wrote it, read it, and listened to it with my family and friends. To advance my understanding of grammar, I read a lot of books and often wrote summaries. I have expanded a lot of my Korean vocabulary through regularly watching Korean dramas and shows, as well as listening to Korean music. I voluntarily took the SAT 2 Korean subject test (as well as other language aptitude tests) in high school and college, all of which I have achieved perfect scores.

About the lesson

I get to know their interests and them as a person. Then, I try to gauge what their goals are: Why do they want to learn Korean? What do they hope to achieve through our meetings? I believe that this helps to make our time together more well-rounded and more efficient in language acquisition, rather than simply regurgitating information.

For math and writing, I have worked with high achieving and lower achieving students from K to 8th grade. For language teaching (Korean), I have taught 5th grade up to college students.

First of all, I think it's extremely beneficial to have a teacher who is equally fluent and comfortable in BOTH languages - the communicating, comfortable language as well as the one that is being learned. It reduces areas of miscommunication!

Also, when it comes to learning a language - it's important that you don't feel afraid to sound things out, and ask for clarification or repetition! It's all about practicing it with a person that makes it most useful out there in the world!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Think about what your goal and desire is to learning! It will help you plan with the teacher to take as many strides as you can towards it. Remember that a teacher is there to support you and not to attack you.
