About Donovan

Bak Mei is a system of Kung Fu that specializes in close-mid range striking. It is a somewhat rare system, recognizable through it's fast hands and focus on explosive power.

My focus, although involving combat application, would be in helping the student to establish coordination and relaxation to eventually lead to proper execution of an explosive form of power.

The concepts themselves are mostly universal understandings of the body and physics, and can apply to just about any motion or any system.

Honestly, I love learning. Although I have my focus in what martial arts I do, other systems always have something to offer. And no matter how far along you are in your journey, the process of learning never stops.

I also love spreading the knowledge. I love to talk about martial arts, the theories behind things, how to make things work and what will keep things from working.

I've always enjoyed martial arts, and have always enjoyed teaching what I know. Teaching in and of itself is a part of the process of learning. By teaching others, we become aware of flaws or mistakes we may have been making, but were unable to spot ourselves.

I have been doing martial arts since I was very young. I originally learned Bak Mei from my dad, and later learned some Wing Chun as well. Eventually, I joined a new Bak Mei organization, giving me a new interpretation of the system as well.

I am 8th Generation Bak Mei under the Cheung Lai Chuen line. I learned from my father, who learned from Felix "Tak Cheung" Wong, who had himself learned from H.B. Un and Ng Yiu.

How we progress will depend on the students level of coordination and prior experience. We may need to break old habits, but most likely will be establishing new habits.

Early on, the goal would be to give the student basic practical set of moves that would be easy to generate power in for a form of basic self defense, while also giving a set of basic exercises to give the student a way of becoming more familiar with their body to eventually lead to even greater power generation.

The beginning will be simple drills, and we'll take things slow so the student can actually see what they are doing, and refine their mechanics.

I've worked with people who were both experienced in their art, and also very new to martial arts in general.

I understand some individuals can take far longer than others to pick up fundamentals based on their level of familiarity with their own body. I have been, and am always willing to take the time needed to help teach a student the basic fundamentals necessary and work with them, and explain it in as many ways as I can possibly think of to help the idea click for them. I understand that each of us has our own form of language, and creating the right imagery through the right words can potentially save someone from years of struggling with a concept.

For those more familiar with martial arts in general, in the past I mostly introduced them to new ideas. Because they were seasoned in martial arts already, they weren't interested in learning a new art, but rather took ideas here and there to supplement their own art.

There are many different focuses one can take when pursuing martial arts. When searching for an instructor, look for one that satisfies what it is you're searching for.

I myself have always wanted biomechanics, but not every instructor knows very much about mechanics of the body.

Some focus more heavily on strategy, some on tradition, others aesthetic, some focus more on speed, others power, and so on. Even within the same lineage from the same art, instructors have different ideas on what makes things work.

See if the teacher is teaching what you're looking for. See if their focus is the same as yours.

If you don't have a focus and don't know what you're looking for exactly, ask yourself why you want to learn. If the instructor satisfies that desire for you, then there is no problem at all.

If all you want to do is spar for example, but the instructor only focuses on forms and patterns, then it might not be the right school for you. But for someone somewhere, it is.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What is it that you're looking for in martial arts?

What type of martial art do you want to do?

What kind of skills are you looking to develop? Do you want flashy kicks? Do you want fast hands? Do you want to focus on grappling? Not every martial art is the same, so not every art will offer every one of these things.

Why do you want to do martial arts?

Details

I am new to charging anyone for lessons of any sort, and my accommodations would be quite minimal.

The experience would simply be us outside in a park like environment, not inside an actual school building.

I will be charging only $30.00 an hour.
