About Brandon

I am a senior in high school with a passion for helping students in need for their test preparation (SAT/ACT) in addition to AP courses. I have worked as a Mathnasium tutor since August 2017, and I am now pursuing private tutoring to help students earn high scores in their standardized tests and classes.

I enjoy helping students learning new concepts and I want to make sure that all of my students are actually understanding the concepts rather than forcing memorization.

I got started teaching when a fellow classmate observed me helping people in my PreCalculus class with questions. They told me to apply for a job at Mathnasium, where I have helped students in grades 1-12 for over 11 months. Now, I am working with individual students, striving to help them get better grades and earn higher scores on standardized tests.

I am a high school student in the top 2% of my classes, having taken six AP courses in high school. In addition, I scored 1510 on the SAT and 35 on the ACT. I am trained as a certified Mathnasium instructor, and while I specialize in math, I can also assist students with the reading, writing, and science sections of the SAT/ACT.

About the lesson

I will begin with an initial consultation and diagnostic test - just to figure out where the student is in terms of the curriculum. Then, I'll work through certain worksheets of concepts they are a bit weak in based on the diagnostic test. Afterward, we would take another quiz and repeat this process. In the school year, I'll have the student attempt certain homework questions and help them relearn fundamentals with worksheets and practice questions. I do not ever want to give students more homework on top of their school workload.

I have worked with students as young as the age of 5 and as old as 17, who take various grade level and Pre-AP math courses. Moreover, I have assisted students with learning disabilities, and I have helped children that were ahead and behind their grade level.

Make sure that your teacher or tutor communicates with you effectively. Often times, students struggle in class because they are afraid to ask questions and fear being laughed at for not knowing a concept. The main benefit of private tutoring is the personal help that you get and the ability to communicate without fear of teasing. Therefore, asking questions and clarifying your learning methods will immensely benefit you and the tutor.

One event I am fond of is teaching a student how to factor a polynomial. After trying to explain it with words, I then tried another method: visual teaching. I took out a piece of paper and demonstrated how making a T-chart could help you figure out the factors of a polynomial. After seeing the students' eyes brighten with comprehension, I knew that he understood the basics of factoring.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
The first question I always tell students to ask themselves is What are the resources I can access? For instance, if you need help with PreCalculus and have an internet connection/device, you could get help on YouTube or Khan Academy. Moreover, asking classmates could also make you understand a concept more than your teacher. However, students should always establish some line of communication with their teacher, as asking them for help should not be something they worry about. Yet, finding resources online that adapt to your learning methods can sometimes be more effective than listening to your teacher.
