About Nathan
Hello! My name is Nathan Brown and I am a graduate student at Clemson University. I received my Bachelor's and Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Mathematics. I am currently working on my PhD in Mechanical engineering. I have a strong passion for math and engineering and enjoy teaching these subjects to others. I have several years of tutoring middle and high school students in a variety of math courses, including Basic Mathematics, Pre-Algebra, Algebra, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus I/II. I also have experience tutoring college level math and engineering classes, including MATLAB coding. I am available to offer online tutoring in any math or engineering classes that a student may be struggling in or wants to get ahead in. I started tutoring my friends in math courses sophmore year of high school. Once I realized I was pretty good at tutoring, I expanded my tutoring services beyond just my friends. I started tutoring student from other high schools as well as middle school students. This passion to help other students succeed followed me to college where I continued to tutor others.
During my time at Clemson (both undergrad and graduate) I have spent time tutoring middle and high schoolers in various math courses. I was also a Teaching Assistant during my time at Clemson which means I was directly responsible for teaching graduate level engineering courses to fellow college students. These experiences have enabled me to learn various teaching methods and how to select the appropriate methods for certain students to reach the highest level of success.

Before even starting the teaching, I like to discuss what the student likes to do outside of class. Whether that is sports, movies, art, or anything, I like to make a conection outside of the strictly student/tutor relationship. Once that has been established, I start by learning what previous teaching methods the student has found successful and unsuccessful (lecturing, quizzes, in-class assignment, group work, homework etc.). From there, I am able to model my teaching style to focus on the methods that the student finds most effective for material retention. Each student learns in their own way, and it is my job to teach the necessary information in the method that will benefit the student the best.
Some people may be cautious going to a college student for tutoring advice. I would say that college students make some of the best tutors because they are better able to connect to the student on a level beyond just the student/tutor relationship.
