It's helpful to know a student's expectations - what do they want to get out of tutoring.
I have only worked with college students but often those students, especially at the community college level, are in classes not much different from high school.
Find someone you're comfortable with, you don't need to be best friends but open communication is essential.
I was proud to be accepted into the PhD Physics program at UVM. It's no small achievement for me to return to school after 20 years and keep pace with much younger students.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should make an honest effort to grapple with the material before seeking help. No amount of tutoring can help a student improve who isn't motivated to succeed.
