I first want to know what a student's comfort level is with the course - do they believe they've "always" had trouble or is it something more recent and specific to course content. Then I like to know where the student is in the course and try to pin down specifically what concepts may be tripping them up. Further, I like to have to ask the student to try to explain to me how the concept was taught in their class so that I can either clarify that teaching or try a different approach.
