About Samantha

Understanding the fundamentals of mathematics is crucial because math concepts build on one another. Each student learns differently, so I explain how to solve math problems in multiple ways. I love making learning fun!

For the past 5 years, I've taught 6th grade Advanced Math, 7th Grade Pre-Algebra, 6th Grade Social Studies-Ancient Civilizations, and 7th Grade English.

I was the head of the “Shark Tank” and School Store.

I enriched student learning by hosting a Math Club every Monday and Tuesday.

I taught students how to created screen-captured videos for many math lessons and integrated 21st century technology throughout core subject lessons.

I understand that math can be challenging for many people, so creating activities and problems to help them understand it more is important to me. Seeing students grasp a concept that they have been struggling with is one to the best feelings a teacher can get.

I attended the University of San Diego, where I got my Education degree. I student taught in San Diego and then moved to Denver, CO, where I taught as SVdP.

I have been teaching for 5 years and I have been tutoring for 4 years.

About the lesson

It is important to understand my students likes and dislikes. It is also important that my students understand why math works. For example, adding 1.5 to 78.2 involves a lot of previous math skills. To fully understand how to solve this problem, students need to understand adding and place value. If they don't understand place value, they won't understand that they need to line up the decimal point in the problem. I explain why this is important to them. Memorizing different rules on how to solve problems will not help them in the long run. If they understand why we solve problems the way we do, they will grasp the concept more easily.

I have worked with students from ages 5-13.

Look for a teacher that loves to learn. If they love to learn, they will be able to pass that skill on to you!

I love creating math projects for students. One of my favorite projects is setting up the classroom like a grocery store and having them solve different problems. This project can work for all grade levels.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Saying "I don't know how to do it!" is probably not correct. There are pieces of the problem that you probably do understand. Try to figure out exactly what you don't understand about the problem.
