About Sage

I have been teaching math and science at all levels for over 6 years now and have spent significant time learning how to teach and connect in different styles that match the needs of my students. I will work with you to ensure that you fully understand all your material and feel confident in applying your knowledge.

I have a background (both Masters degree and Bachelors degree) in Earth Sciences, with a speciality on Volcanology, using experiements and numerical modeling of fluid and thermal dynamics to better understand volcanic hazards. I have taught various undergraduate and graduate courses in Earth Science. Additionally, I have worked in the public school system as an Educational Assistant, helping students develop the foundation and tools to achieve their goals.

The best moments in my work is when I see a student grow in confidence and are able to connect the material to their life. Once, in an earth processes class, a student came up to me at the end of class and told me that before the class, she never thought twice about rocks but now when she went on hikes she noticed the rocks and tried to figure out what they were with the knowledge she gained in class.

For me, seeing the "aha" moment when a subject stops becoming overwhelming and starts to make sense to a student is what the work is all about. When the material becomes more than just math or science that they "have to learn" and becomes something that they can see and find in their lives is what mentoring is all about.

I began working as an undergraduate teaching assistant (TA) during my second year of college. I loved my earth processes class I took and I loved the 3 hour per week lab that accompanied it. I had a phenomial TA and I wanted to be like her and to make the material accessible and understandable like she did. My department, Earth Sciences, was offering undergraduate teaching assistant positions for that class and I signed up. I got the position and continued in it for the rest of my undergraduate. I continued on into graduate school and since then have focused on teaching as it is my passion.

About the lesson

When I first begin working with a new student, I begin by getting to know the student and their interests and background. This helps me better connect the subject material to their life. After that we'll dive in and talk about where they are at with the material, where they feel confident and comfortable and where they feel uncomfortable with the material. I often find, particularly in math, that when students feel uncomfortable with the material, they have an earlier skill that they might not have fully grasped that is cropping up and further increasing the difficulty in understanding. I like, at that point, to backtrack and work on that earlier skill first in order to solidify a strong educational foundation to build on.

I have worked with a diverse set of students ranging from undergraduate students in Atlanta to undergraduate and graduate students in Eugene, K-3rd grade in Portland, and 6-8th grade in Eugene. I have taught students from all backgrounds.
