About Srika

I started teaching my senior year of high school when I started off tutoring some students in the grades below me. I realized that because I went through the same textbooks and the same style of learning as them, I was able to teach them better than those who don't know the curriculum as well as I do. This pushed me to tutor other kids, as I know that I can help them do better because of what I have been through.

I have completed high school and am currently a student at UCLA studying electrical engineering. I have gone through various math classes throughout my educational career, which means I have been exposed to different curriculums and teaching styles. My experience with learning the new curriculum used in schools today gives me a unique perspective to teach each student, as I have actually gone through the same thing they have.

I normally start off by communicating with the student regarding what they need help with, whether its getting ahead in school, help on homework, help with a certain topic, etc. Then I identify what tools they would like me to specifically use and focus on such as using their own textbook or teaching them topics based on a standard path. This normally happens previous to meeting with a student for our first session. Following this, I build a custom lesson plan for them and start off our first session with a placement exam so I know what they need to work on. This will allow me to start off with teaching what they need to learn rather than repeating things they already know.

I have worked with students ages 8-15, in elementary, middle, and early high school, so I am familiar with teaching many age groups and gearing lessons towards that.

I would tell the student to pick a teacher that fits the best with you. Some students work better with rigid teachers who teach straight from the textbooks, while others prefer teachers who just teach about the subject. It really is a matter of preference and if you don't like one teacher, don't feel bad to try another out. What matters the most is finding someone who teaches in the way that you learn best.

I am a major space geek, and one of the most exciting recent events is when NASA launched spacecrafts to study 11 asteroids in order to learn more about the early universe.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
The students would have to think about what they want help in (homework, getting ahead, getting caught up, etc). Additionally, they need to think about if they want to be taught the material in their textbook, or just different topics in the subject. They also need to set a budget for their classes and look for teachers within that. The students should also set clear expectations and goals for themselves to share with the teacher so that they know how to best guide them.
