About Tamara

I have been tutoring for over 10 years in several subjects, specializing in high school and college level math. Having spent most of my tutoring hours in homes building relationships with families, I hope to bring a warm personal touch and clear communication to the online learning environment. About the lesson

I start by letting the student explain their thought process to me and get an idea of the assigned problems. Sometimes, I will find the easiest assigned problem as a starting point or else offer a much easier problem for the student to work through so I can pinpoint how much the student already understands.

If the student is completely confused about the assignment, I work with them to find a happy place where they can remember what to do, and build from there.

Don't settle. If the teaching style isn't making sense to you and the teacher isn't adjusting or at least recognizing your specific learning needs or challenges in the first session, move on. You don't need a talking textbook, especially when it comes to math.

In teaching a student how to build a trinomial from two binomials, I covered up parts of the equation and explained to her that it's easy to mix up multiple steps, making it seem much more complicated than it really is. We went through a single example and she said, "Oh. Really? My teacher never explained it that way to me." And it was all she needed.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
It's important to pay attention to your body and your brain. Get to know yourself and try to predict the time you really need to learn a new concept or to finish an assignment. Have you been working for three hours? Take a break. Have you had enough food, water, sleep? Do you have the opportunity to try working on this assignment again tomorrow? Running on fumes can make you work much, much harder to understand and work through the same problems.
