About Maya

I have always enjoyed math. Since I was in elementary school I excelled in all of my math and sciences classes. When I graduated I had college credits up to my junior year. Throughout high school, I was a rock climbing instructor. I typically ended up with students who had learning differences because the other instructors struggled. I loved every moment. Some days were harder than others but overall I saw their potential and I wanted to see them grow despite their challenges. In college, I originally went for Aerospace Engineering. I am currently reapplying to be an Architect but am excited to teach in the meantime.

Although I don't have a degree in teaching, I have experience in very high math classes. I also used to tutor in high school and even did my senior project as a teacher's assistant for my math and computer sciences teacher. I also have lots of experience working with kids and have done significant research to learn different methods when it comes to teaching. I also have my own experience with having an IEP in high school so I am always open to students that aren't meeting the standards in the traditional school environment.

About the lesson

The first step when working with new students is to get to know them and how they learn. This way I can adapt my teaching style to what will work best for them. I want to get them excited about learning so if this means we might play a game or maybe the student needs a more structured lesson to be the most successful. When it comes to learning I want them to see the big picture of how it works and why it works. I believe in diagnostic teaching where everything has a cause and effect. This will prepare them for the future and solidify their understanding early. I like to use rubric scoring for at-home work. This builds confidence while still allowing room for improvement. I want my students to learn to have confidence in their work and themselves. And we always end the lesson on a positive note (approved by the parents). So if they are struggling that day or are feeling down, it doesn't have to take away from their entire day.
