About Yannick

To me, the most satisfiying part of teaching, is the moment of realization. The moment where a student finally understands a concept/topic. I have seen too many instances, in my experience, where a student is able to get a good grades in a class without really understanding the material. This may seem fine in the moment, but a few months/years down the line when he/she requires that pre-requisite knowledge, we end up in a dilemma. Thus, I strive to help each of my students to gain a thorough understanding of whichever subject or topic we are studying. By doing this, even after our paths have diverted, I'm confident that I trained that student properly. Every teacher/tutor wants their student/s to get good grades, so much so that at times we can lose sight of what is really important. If I can help a student to truly understand a subject, then I never worry about the grade because I know it will be good.

I believe that I can connect with students better than other tutors because I'm actually still a student. I'm a currently graduate student so I can relate to being in need of a little extra attention and care at times. Even the best students need extra help at times and personally I'm still grateful to the teachers that appreciated that and were able to help me. I really enjoy working with students and helping them achieve their potential. I was fortunate enough to have a teacher that the did his utmost to help me, so it is a real desire of mine to be able to help someone else in a similar manner. It's dishearting to me when I see students fall behind in a class and be neglected by their teacher when the opposite should happen. My first experience tutoring was during high school where I helped a student in the year below me. During our first session he was overly gracious to me because in that hour I had given him more time and attention than his actual teacher did over the course of the semester. That was a heartwarming moment for me because I was able to make a difference in his academic experience and help him turn his grade around.

My first experience teaching was while I was in high school in Jamaica. I helped a student in the grade below me with math. That was a good experience for me, and it made me appreciate how hard teachers work for their students. A few years later I helped a friend's son prepare for the Caribbean Examination Council (CXC) math exam. Perhaps most notably, as a PhD candidate I was required to be a teaching assistant for a differential equations course at Princeton. That was my first experience teaching an entire group of students.

I graduated from MIT in 2018 with a Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering and I'm currently a rising 4th year graduate student in the chemical and biological department at Princeton University. Thus, I believe I'm qualified to tutor with math, physics and chemistry up to a beyond the high school level depending on the topic. Additionally, if there is a college student studying engineering or more specifically chemical engineering then I'll be able to offer help that may be more difficult to find.

About the lesson

The most important piece of advice I would give to a student looking to hire a tutor is to find someone that you think you will be comfortable around. I'm sure there are many tutors available that are qualified to teach/tutor, however, if you aren't comfortable speaking with and learning from that person then that defeats the whole purpose of tutoring.
