I ask my students what they already understand and what they dont understand. I ask them about their interests/hobbies and apply it to Math. I use what they know to build on there foundations
I have worked with both college level and highschool students in the past. The student must have a willingness to understand the material.
Look for a teacher who wants to invest in you. Who teaches you not just the steps but the processes of why it works.

He is great! With his BS in applied mathematics and MS in statistics, he was able to help me overcome some of my concerns and questions for several courses.
