About Holden
I have a history of math instruction and support both independently and professionally. I have acted self employed tutor who provides support in all levels of secondary mathematics from 6th grade math and above. Additionally I have a bachelor's degree with a heavy emphasis on mathematics, and a masters in education with a focus on teaching and have spent the last 4 years of my professional career as a credentialed high school math teacher. I taught 9th grade algebra 1, and 11th grade algebra 2 in South Central Los Angeles for 3 years; I have now had the opportunity to teach for the last year as a 12th grade pre-calculus and calculus instructor.
I have a track record of proven student success based on standardized testing scores showing a year and a half growth in academic performance based on the test metrics and exceeding the national average for that assessment.
My focus on math instruction is discovery based, with a focus on the inherent mystery and beauty that students often miss when they get scared of mathematics. In fact that idea, fear, is at the hear of my practice, because I firmly believe that the biggest obstacle between a student succeeding in math is not their abilities, but their belief in themselves. My motto as a math teacher is that the math always looks scarier than it is difficult. This combined with an approach that celebrates failure and mistakes as a learning opportunity, rather than penalizing it fosters an academic environment that allows students to explore mathematics safely. This provides a space for my students to engage with math in ways like they may never have before, and in my mind this is the key to success. It is this engagement that allows students to succeed beyond simply understanding how to solve problems or calculate values, but to understand the intricacies that math allows us to understand about the world around us.
