About Dylan

I've been playing guitar for over 12 years now, with experience playing live and recording, in any genre from jazz to rock to metal to country. My experience includes winning two awards at the UNC-Charlotte Jazz Festival, extensive live performances at local venues including the Fillmore, the Visualite Theater, and more, and recording both covers and original music.

I can work with clients of any skill level, but am especially comfortable teaching beginners and young people. I started playing at age 10, so I'm personally familiar with the difficulties of picking up an instrument at a young age and maintaining consistent practice without boring exercises and uninteresting songs. My goal is to help every student reach their personal goals with a customized plan for them, whether that means learning their favorite songs, becoming an expert in music theory, or achieving technical mastery.

I enjoy seeing someone become passionate about playing the instrument because of a spark of inspiration that may have happened in a lesson or due to something I shared with the student.

As a college student, I was seeking ways to make some extra money on the side. As I examined my skillset, teaching guitar seemed like a natural fit, so I began marketing myself to friends and family and that's how I got started.

I have years of lessons I took on my own, high school jazz education, and over a decade of experience as a player.

About the lesson

The first and most important step is identifying what the student's goals are and how close or far they are to achieving them at our starting point. I can then come up with a plan that will have the student progressing towards those goals while also enjoying themselves. Some people want to become technical masters of the instrument, some want to write songs, some want to just learn their favorites, etc. This is why I reject the typical one-size-fits-all approach of music schools or teachers and customize a plan for every client to fit their needs.

I've worked with students all across the age/experience/genre spectrum, but my most prevalent experience is with young people and beginner/intermediate players.

Find a teacher that will teach you what you want to learn. The most important thing for a beginner is enjoying playing the instrument even if you aren't able to do much yet, and a good teacher will work with you to figure out your interest so you can accomplish something fun together.

Details

I offer weekly lessons of either 45 minutes or an hour. As we deal with Covid-19, I offer lessons via zoom or in-person at a location of your choice, whichever you're more comfortable with. 45 minutes is $25, an hour is $30. I'll take $5 off for zoom lessons since there is no travel cost involved for me.

I take all payment from week to week, so you can try one or two lessons to see if it's a good fit with no long-term committment, and you can schedule flexibly if you need a week off here or there.
