About Ylonda
YLONDA NICKELL - “THE QUEEN OF THE ALTO”
Alto saxophonist Ylonda Nickell has shared the stage with many jazz and contemporary heavyweights including Sonny Stitt, Mose Allison, Willie Nelson, Boots Randolph, Bobby Enriquez, Michael Aragon, Jackie King, Marshal Wilkerson, Larry Van, John Raczka, Michael Brandeburg, Jim Boggio, Tim Haggerty, Lou Donaldson, Joe Hougnon and Grammy award-winning violinist Mad Stollings. The late Martha Young was Ylonda's early mentor who helped shape her professionalism, technique, understanding and appreciation of jazz at an early age. Her numerous recording credits include two solo albums, "Alto Lady" and "Do You Think I'm Saxy" as well as other projects with Willie Nelson, Mel Graves, Holly Near, Marshal Wilkerson, Chris Clark, Denise Perrier, Debbie Voltura, Fran Fostin, Vernell Anders, Mary Watkins and a host of others. Her big band credits include "Equinox" and "Les Brown and the Band of Renown". She has also played in a variety of horn sections with the likes of Mic Gillette, Mike Rinta, Pee Wee Ellis, Richard Howell, John Hunt and Matt Eakle, and The San Francisco Medicine Ball Band. Always on the look out for new styles to play, Ylonda enjoys playing a variety of music genres including funk, blues, country, rock and R&B. Ylonda has recently worked with producer/guitarist Joe Hougnon, who started his own record company, Propaganda Records. Their first album, Back to California, featuring Marshal Wilkerson, in their own unique style of music, includes an infectious blend of R&B, blues, jazz, funk and soul. I believe that the tools for learning an instrument to express yourself through the art form of music is for everyone and is a process that is as individualistic in nature as is one's personality. I get great satisifaction in helping to creatively develope the skills of all individuals and/or groups no matter the age, the pace or road blocks!

Private instruction for all ages including the saxophone and all woodwinds for the very beginner to the more advanced. All lessons incorporate teqnique development, ear training, sight reading skills development from very beginning to advanced; music fundamentals, theory, and improvisation skills development for those who may wish to learn how to "solo".
Very young age beginners in elementary school to more advanced players wishing to grow their performance skills. Have also taught many elderly individuals in their 70's whose life dream was to learn to play the saxophpne
Don't be afraid to make it clear what you goals are and what it is you want to achieve. It is OK to make sure that your teacher, coach or instructor has the shills and experience to help you develop the skills you need to achieve your goals and level of expertise you are seeking. Don't be afraid to ask questions.
I have discovered that many students I have taught through the years ahave continued on with world renown careers of their own as performers and others as succeful teachers and educators.
