About Elizabeth

Danielle chan has been a practicing professional musician since 2014. She is passionate about teaching and empowering every age group to learn various percussive instruments. Texas implant with k-12 education certification with 4 years of both ensemble and individual lesson instruction. She received the 2015-2017 percussive fellow position with Da Camera of Houston. Danielle received her master's degree in percussion studies at NYU Steinhardt in 2019, where she studied with various percussive masters of Broadway.

I love the camaraderie with other musicians and being part of something bigger to bring entertainment to people. As a teacher, I enjoy helping students find their forms of expression. I enjoy being part of creating something that empowers and encourages people whether as an audience member or as a fellow musician working through their artform.

while in school for a music education degree I began teaching lessons for middle and high school students in public school band classes. I would prepare them, for regional competitions. In the summertime, I would prepare percussion ensembles for marching band competitions.

5 years of a bachelor's degree in which performances and ensemble work was included for all years.

2 years performing as the percussion fellow for Da Camera of Houston in chamber ensembles throughout the city of Houston

2 years of a master's degree with an emphasis in broadway percussion, chamber, and West African percussion

First I would assess the student's previous knowledge of music and the instruments of choice by having them play anything previously worked on. Then we would create a program based on their goals and desires, pairing technique, and basics with music that interests the student. If the student is enrolled in ensembles or wanting to attend summer music camps, we will work on the required repertoire while filling in any gaps of music theory and aural skills as applicable to the instrument of choice

I have worked with every age level. I have worked with k-12 grade students. With students on the autism spectrum. I have also worked with elderly students with ocular disabilities.

Find a teacher that is attentive and patient. Find someone that is able to explain in the best way for you to understand, because everyone learns in different ways. It is good to find a teacher with performance experience, but it is also best to find a teacher that seeks to meet you where you are and help you to become the best version of yourself.

I had the opportunity to go to Ghana to learn an instrument called the Gyil (a pentatonic xylophone) and to learn about dancing and drumming as a cohesive entity. I was encouraged to experience and learn this music which has heavily influenced the percussive world. From jazz to rock to pop and rap and to contemporary percussion works, all find their heritage in the music of West Africa.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
When it comes to percussion, what instruments are you specifically interested in learning?

What are your goals in learning said instruments?

If interested in Marimba or xylophones do you have any keyboard experience?  (this includes piano)

Do you have any experience with music theory?
