The variety of people you meet as a teacher is the most fun part of the job, no question. To help lead someone to a lifelong discipline such as playing an instrument is very fulfilling as a teacher.

Teaching is a logical extension of a musician's life- plus, it is a lot of fun if you like people.

My training is strictly as an oboe performance major- orchestra, chamber music, solo. I have taught in the extension Division of the Manhattan School of Music and various other schools as adjunct faculty, most recently at the Levine School of Music and Holton Arms Academy, both in Washington, DC.

About the lesson

In my experience it is best for a student to be at least in the 5th grade in order to be able to reach all the keys (there are no half-size oboes!) and supply the pressure required for the instrument to function. Given that, explaining the dynamics of how it works is a starting place.

My youngest student was 10, I think. She was probably a little young for oboe though. Most have been in high school preparing for college. One was in his late 50s- a research scientist at NIH. He loved to play and could have done well had he time to practice. My absolute oldest was in her 70s- and one of my favorite students ever.

Find a teacher with a sense of humor and proportion. Most people- often students included- are torn scheduling too many things.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
All instruments require a reachable goal or two to make learning them a fulfilling pursuit. All of them are difficult and the oboe, in particular, does not lend itself to part time and unfocused study. Think through what you want to achieve in playing.

Details

I do not teach 1/2 hour lessons due to the inevitable interference of reeds in the progress of study. It may be argued that the reed is the the most important part of playing (although few oboists would contest this). Sometimes by the time a reed is fixed a half hour as already gone, so a hour is pretty much a minimum. I usually charge $120 an hour, but I am not a clock-watcher unless I have to be.
