About Jared

My voice lessons stand out because not only do I focus on confidence in the voice, but I also work on technique in any style including Musical Theatre, Country, Pop...whatever the style is, I go through technique! As well as performance. Being an actor myself, I know how performance and interpretation in the song can be very important!

I have always loved teaching voice lessons to kids! For the past two years now I have worked on my own as well as at Born to Perform Studio located in Westlake Village, California. Watching the students grow as performers and artists is always the best and rewarding part! After my lessons, they always enjoy singing much more and love performing!

I will start by saying, I have always wanted to teach. I was doing a play with a friend who is an acting coach at a performing arts studio out in Thousand Oaks. Towards the end of the play, he was saying that this studio needs another vocal instructor. So I went in and interviewed and was hired!

I have recieved my AA in Vocal Performance from College of the Canyons where I studied operatic and musical theatre style. I then trasnferred to Cal. State Northridge where I recieved by Bachelor's of Music in Vocal Performance where I continued my training in opera and musical theatre.

About the lesson

Well, the first few lessons are always getting to know their personality as much as their voice. It's really important to have a teacher student trust, that way when I give instruction, the student is willing to jump on in knowing there is no judgment from the teacher. I will always ask questions such as "What kind of music do you like to listen to?" "If you could pick a favorite artist, who would it be?" "As you take voice lessons with me, do you just want to sing for fun or do you want to take your singing somewhere?" As I ask these types of questions, the lessons will progress from there.

For the past few years, I have taught the age range from 4 to 18. Most of these students are musical theatre based, looking for their own musical theatre voice to continue down this path. But I have taught and coached singers who want to sing pop and jazz as well.

I would say find a teacher that best fits you and your needs! There can be a lot of voice coaches and teachers out there who all have different personalities and different styles of teachings. But, if you find one that works for you and works well with what you are looking for out of voice lessons, stick with them!

I had the privilege to music direct Legally Blonde Jr. for the students through Born to Perform Studio. This was a rewarding experience because it was a two week intensive, so we worked with the kids every day to put on a show in two weeks time! That could go by quick, so we had to work effeciently. But, getting to work with the kids and have them learn challenging but fun music, and then seeing and hearing it come to life on stage, knowing what you did resonated and worked with them, is the best feeling!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Before a student wants to take voice lessons, questions they should ask themselves are "Why do I want to sing?" "Do I like to sing?" "Do I see myself as a singer in the future?" These can be easy yet difficult questions to answer. Singing should be fun. Singing IS fun. However, learning how to sing and better the craft takes patience and practice. It doesn't come overnight! If you're willing to put in the practice while you're enjoying singing, then absolutely do it. In fact, if you don't know how you feel yet, sing anyway!

My lessons are normally based around 30 minute and 60 minute segments. For 30 minute lessons I charge $45 and for 60 minute lessons I charge $75. I have found through the years that voice teachers can be expensive but I believe my pricings are very reasonable!
