About Andrew
Andrew Biraj is a photojournalist based in Washington, DC. He has fifteen years experiences of covering breaking news, in-depth photo stories, politics and sports. He covered Afghanistan, Myanmar, Bangladesh, Cambodia and UK.
Biraj has been published internationally, including in: National Geographic Magazine, Time Magazine, The New York Times, International Herald Tribune, Wall street Journal, BBC, Al Jazeera, The Guardian, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, The Observer Magazine, Geo, The Times, Los Angeles Times, Buzz Feed, Boston Glob Big Picture,Paris Match, Le Monde, Mare, Sydney Morning Herald, Newsweek, Stern, Vogue Italy, Asian Geo, Hindustan Times, The Times of India, amongst other international publications.
Biraj was a participant in the 2008 World Press Photo Joop Swart Masterclass. He has won several awards including: third prize in The 2011 World Press Photo Award;Honorable Mention in The 2013 National Geographic Photo Contest; second prize in The 2013 Pictures of the Year (POYi); 1st prize in 2008 and 3rd third prize in 2010 in Best of Photojournalism (BOP) awards by the National Press Photographers Association of America (NPPA);Best Portfolio in The 2013 Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar Contest; a Gold award (in 2013) a Silver award (in 2011) and a Bronze (in 2007) in The China International Press Photo Contest (CHIPP); the 2010 Award of Excellence in Feature Photography, from the Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA); and, the 2010 South Asian Journalists Association (SAJA) Awardfor an outstanding photograph about South Asia.
His works has been featured, exhibited and published worldwide, including in Visa Pour l’Image in Perpignan, the Angkor Photo Festival in Cambodia, Yangon Photo Festival in Myanmar, the International Photography Biennial of the Islamic World in Iran, Noorderlicht Photo Festival in the Netherlands, the Kiyosato Museum of Photographic Arts in Japan, the Church of Santa Maria della Pietà in Venice, the National Art Gallery in Malaysia and Drik Gallery in Bangladesh.
Biraj exhibited his long term project BONDED STITCHES & STRUGGLE; TESTIMONY OF LIFE IN BANGLADESH’S GARMENT INDUSTRY, on the one year anniversary of the collapse of Rana Plaza, which have been visited by more than 10,000 visitors in Bangladesh.The exhibition took place from April 22- May 1, 2014, simultaneously in three different venues including an open-air show near the collapsed building site in Savar, Bangladesh.
Biraj is the co founder and a lifetime member of Counter Foto Photography Department in Bangladesh, which was established in 2012. He self published his first book INSIGHT in 2011. Counter Foto published his second book BONDED STITCHES & STRUGGLE; TESTIMONY OF LIFE IN BANGLADESH’S GARMENT INDUSTRY (Bengali Version) on April, 2014.
