About Jason

ATTENTION: We are not currently taking new students.

I started my professional photography career in 1989 and I have worked in a variety of genres including sports, real estate, families, kids, high school seniors, and portraiture. If I had to pick my favorite it would be creating character portraits.

I tailor my lessons to meet the students at their level of understanding and work with them to meet the goals they have. I also try to make every lesson fun as well as educational.

The aspect of photography that is the most fulfilling is helping people see a side of themselves they may not have ever seen before. Whether it is beauty or power, everyone deserves to see themselves in a positive way.

When it comes to education, teaching someone how to do something I love is my way of paying it forward and ensuring that the artistry of photography lives on in the next generation of photographers. With the advent of cell phones and the popularity of the "selfie", we need professional photographers more now than ever.

I believe it was Tony Robbins who said, "The best way to really hone your skills is to teach someone else what you know."

I love sharing information and I truly believe that learning is a gift that no one can take away.

I got my first camera in 1985 and since then I have worked managing portrait studios, shooting for various newspapers and publications as well as real estate agencies and countless clients. I have literally had over 10,000 people sitting in front of my camera.

I am also an insatiable learner. I am constantly seeking to master new styles and techniques.

About the lesson

We begin by assessing your current knowledge base and then we discuss where you would like to be at the end of the lessons.

I give real-world, tactical instruction that you can use today to improve your photography. Whether you choose one lesson or 100, you will be a better photographer when we are done.

I have taught all age groups. In the mid-1990s I was shooting school pictures so I had the summers off. I worked as a camp counselor for a branch of the Boys and Girls Clubs of America. I taught archery to inner-city boys from age 8 to about 16. Over the years I have expanded my teaching and really enjoy learners of any age.

Find someone who is actively working in the field that they are teaching. Unless you are in the grind day after day you lose touch with changes in the industry.

I shoot a lot of free shoots. Sometimes it is underprivileged high school seniors who can't afford portraits and sometimes it is a person who has defeated a demon in their lives and just deserves a day to have fun. I recently did a shoot for a young woman who was in her second year of sobriety and when we finished her shoot she said, "Thank you for giving me a day to feel pretty. That makes it all worthwhile.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
The best advice I can give is to have a list of 3 to 5 things you want to learn and find a teacher who is willing to modify their lessons to meet your needs.

I normally charge $50 per hour for 1-on-1 instruction. I am certainly open to groups but please understand that those lessons will take more time.
