About Douglas

Photography provides an opportunity to never cease creating. The age of the smartphone has given practically everyone the opportunity to take pictures. I encourage others to move beyond taking pictures to creatively making photographs.

UPDATE 4/5/2020

In all that is going in society today and Covid-19 mandating that we shelter in place, I have thought a lot about the online resources that many have available and discovered through my own practice that there is a lot that can be found to photograph in and around one's own home.

Having said that, please continue to view the rest of my profile here and if you are still eager to study, there is no reason that we can't.

Resources such as Zoom are available, as are other social media platforms, where a student and teacher can still be actively engaged and involved.

If that is something you would like to consider, please let me know.

Photography is the ultimate art of observation. The camera is a paint brush for those of us who can't draw. The things we observe become our canvas.

I enjoy photographing a variety of subjects, from architecture to sports, and in various mediums.

I now work predominantly with digital cameras, but my passion for photography began in the darkroom. As such, I have worked with a variety of mediums and processes.

I typically work out in the field and do not have a "classroom," per say. Any formal teaching would be done at a neutral location, which can be established after an initial consultation.

I first began doing some form of teaching through the Savannah Photo Workshops and satellite affiliates of the Maine Media Workshops.  I also worked in a staffed, non-faculty, position at the Savannah College of Art & Design.  Over the past number of years I have been the guest lecturer/speaker for various events at the collegiate level.

I began experiminting with black and white photography, teaching myself at the age of sixteen.  I now have over twenty years working professionally in the field.
In college, my concentration was geared towards fine art photography.  I took specific courses in landscape photography, studio lighting, and documentary photography, among others.

Setting forth a series of goals, starting with the basics and then moving forward by creating assignments that challenge the way different subjects can be seen.
Fielding questions is a welcomed opportunity for everyone, as there is always something new to be learned.

Predominantly college aged and older.

A teacher that encourages and inspires students to seek out and learn all aspects of the medium.
Photography itself has a vast, alibet short, history compared to other art forms.  The opportunities to learn various aspects are limitless.

Photographically I have spent the previous two years contributing to the Appalachian State Univeristy athletic program.  It has been a welcomed challenge for me as it required me to step out of my normal comfort zone and learn another aspect of the medium.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
This conversation should be a shared and open conversation with one another so that the teacher better understands the students needs, based upon what the student hopes to achieve.
