About Craig

Shortly after earning my BFA in photography from U of Illinois, I got lucky and jumped right into a career shooting what I love, and have traveled the world getting paid to do it ever since. Whether it was good timing or luck or working my ass off, probably a bit of all three, I was fortunate that shooting subjects and projects I was passionate about early on galvanized a large enough audience to sustain me. Today, I still seek out stories of the untold, offbeat subcultures, action sports and its characters, and I get to go shoot them, film them, and write about them. The road is frequently unpredictable, but it keeps the ride exciting, creatively fulfilling, and a smile on my face. See some of the work at (concealed information) or on Instagram @achampionphoto

I'm grateful to have the freedom to roam, to see things in the world many may not have the opportunity to see. I have the privilege of showing it to them.

I also love opening people up to photography, be it with their smart phone, a new pro mirrorless, or an old 35mm or 4x5 they found at an estate sale or on ebay and want to learn how to shoot with it. All is possible. Photography comes from within. All great photographers are/have been story tellers, because telling a great story with one image is not easy. So the first lesson is, you do not have to own great gear to be a great photographer. Photography is you, the camera is nothing more than a tool to execute what you already know is there.

I did a year of grad school at U of Arizona in 1994/95 where I was offered a position teaching their basic undergrad photography course.

I have a Bachelors of Fine Art degree in photography from University of Illinois.

I've been a professional freelance photographer, artist, director since 1996 having worked with brands such as Burton Snowboards, Element Brand, Nike, EA Sports, Kodak, Rock The Vote, Adidas, STX, Snowboarder Magazine, Monster Children, and Girl Skateboards, to name a few.

Helping a student discover what they find interesting about the world is pretty vital. If the answer is nothing, they might have no business being a photographer.

Mostly people/students wanting to learn film photography. But I shoot all types of photography, including motion for my job.

I teach beginners through advanced levels. My specialties are black and white, natural light photography, natural light in film photography. How to read natural light, medium and large format (4x5) photography, HOLGA photography, Using DoF, shooting action and sports, landscape, editorial series, and portraits on location, and sticking with style.

Any teacher who makes photography about the equipment over personal point of view... run for the hills.

I am fond of my wife completing an outdoor program on leadership and guiding people into the backcountry.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Why do they need a photography teacher? What do they need to accomplish with their photography?

I teach with hourly rates across a wide swath of photography. Teaching basic photography principles on an iPhone is much more cost and time effective than teaching someone basic or advanced film photography. Pricing is based on a students needs and if I am going to them or they are coming to me.
