About Matthew

I am an Orlando based photographer who loves to travel and I often shoot in Italy. I primarily photograph weddings and portraits - including cosplay. I specialize in using existing light and often experiment with infrared - both with film and also with a modified DSLR. I have a portable studio setup, but prefer to shoot clients in their native habitat. I feel this brings a more relaxed, natural feel to the photograph.

I enjoy working with people who want to learn how to photograph and use their gear. I do so in a relaxed, no pressure atmosphere. I realize that everyone learns a little different, so I don't like to work in large groups.

I have photographed weddings, portraits, cosplay events and even documented a few travels of mine, including Italy and Africa. I find some of the best shots are candid and 'in the moment'. To me, a photograph captures this moment in time and should be viewed again and again so we don't forget where we have been and what we have done.

I love working with people and capturing the moment! Thre is a story in every moment and place - we just need to find it.

My interests are varied and I enjoy anything challenging. I shoot mostly digital now, but sometimes I break out a medium format film camera when time is available. I also experiment with digital and film infrared with landscapes and people.

After many weddings and portrait sessions, I often heard "I wish I could get images that looked like that", or "I need to get a better camera so my picture will look great",  I decided to offer private lessons to explain that it's not just the good camera, you just need to understand a few things to get the best shot you can with whatever camera you have (including your cell phone!).

I've been shooting since I could first hold a camera and most of what I know is from teaching myself. I have working along cinematographers and other pros for years. I have also taken classes along the way to fine tune what I know. I'm always learning.

I usually ask "What are your expectations?" What do you want to learn? I then find out what camera they will be using. then I start out with the basics and go from there. People learn in diffrent ways. Some like to be shown by example first others like to be told all the technicall details first. I ask what they like and go from there. I like to explain a concept and they try it out right away with them so they can see for themselves how things work. Of course, I'll answer questions along the way!

I've working with little kids (9 years old) to their grandparents!  Most people aren't going to school to be a film maker, they just want to take good images of their family or of their vacation. There are some students that do want to get into fine art photography or even some experimental works, and that's also a lot of fun.

I would say to think about what is it that you really want to learn and how fast you want to learn it. Then see if the teacher is willing to teach you exactly what you want at the pace you are comfortable with.

My favorite "event" would be going on vacation in Italy! what a great place to photograph! Great people and beautiful things to see around every corner. I do love to to cosplay conventions. There's nothing like being on a rooftop at night shooting Batman and Robin.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Make a list of specifics. Do I really want to learn all the buttons on the camera or do I just want to know more about what makes a great photo? Do I need jsut one lesson should I take several?  I often hear "Is my camera good enough?" - Ask the teacher. Usually, you can start taking better images with whatever you have, but maybe your end goal might require you to upgrade.

Details

$60/hour is the basic rate. I suggest a one-on-one session, however, some students prefer to bring a friend of a similiar learning level. I let the friend to come for $30/hour.  If the student and friend split the total cost, it's a great deal! Most students find that one hour at a time works out well, but lessons can continue for more time if available. Lessons usually include covering something technical and real world practice to ensure the student has understood what was gone over.
