About Joann
It was a surprise to me to discover how much I enjoy teaching photography. Few things are more rewarding than seeing the look in a student’s eyes when everything starts to click! I love that moment, and I love the opportunity to share some of the things I’ve learned along my own journey.
Biography
Joann’s use of photography as a means of expression began with film and has journeyed to include digital and alternative methods. Her work has roots in more traditional media but has expanded to include unusual print surfaces such as vellum with gold leaf, aluminum cans and im- age transfers to wood.
Joann shares her work at local art shows, galleries and personal exhibits. She teaches classes at Greenville Center for Creative Arts, Spartanburg Art Museum and Wild Hare Gallery, as well as gives private lessons in photography, iPhonography, digital processing including Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom, and alternative processes such as image transfers and cyanotypes.

It amazes me how photography has changed in just the relatively short time I have used it as my means of creative expression. I started with film in a darkroom and was certain I would never consider (ugh) digital photography as my primary tool. Now it is not only my primary tool but my first choice. Seeing these changes and embracing them has secured my status as a life long student and I am thrilled to be able to offer classes that share some of the things I’ve picked up along the way.
I primarily shoot digital photography using my Nikon Z6 or D7100 or (believe it or not!) my iPhone. I do my post-processing on an iMac using Adobe Photoshop and Corel Painter. Incorporating my own digital textures adds a personal touch to my work. Part of the art of photography is choosing a print medium that fits the image - my choices include archival quality canvas, fine art watercolor papers, trans- parencies for image transfers, vellum and fine art photograph papers in smooth or natural fibers printed on my Epson Stylus Pro 3880 printer. I love to experiment - my favorite question is “I wonder what will happen if I try this?!” That curiosity has led me to printing on alternative surfaces such as aluminum cans and non-typical papers as well as and trying different styles of image transfers.
I started teaching Beginning DSLR Photography at Greenville Center for Creative arts 3 or 4 years ago. From there I have also taught iPhonography, Creative Photographic Processes such as image transfers and cyanotypes. I also teach Adobe Photoshop and Lightroom. I currently teach at GCCA, Spartanburg Art Museum, private lessons and at my Gallery (Wild Hare Gallery) in Travelers Rest, SC. I also have an online class available on SkillShare.
I began teaching beginner watercolor classes a few years ago when my art gallery needed a teacher. I had been painting as a way to relax and gain inspiration for my photography but quickly realized it is a process I enjoy and wanted to share.
I have a liberal arts degree from Wisconsin Lutheran College and supplemented that with Visual Arts at Greenville Technical College where my focus was photography.

I like to get to know a little about their background, experience and goals with taking lessons. From there I can tailor classes to meet individual needs.
I love teaching beginner students and students who have struggled with learning how to manually control their cameras and gotten frustrated. It’s so satisfying when I am able to help clarify some of the elusive principles that are shared in all types of photography. My main goal is to get students comfortable enough with their equipment that they are willing to start experimenting and confident enough to try different settings.
You can do this! Just break it down in small bits and pretty soon you will master your camera. Find a teacher you can relate to, take a few lessons, practice and you will be amazed at how quickly it all comes together.
I recently opened a gallery with fellow local artist, Kym Easter. The process has been an exciting adventure. We have met so many wonderful local artists - both established and emerging. Working with these people has pushed me to work harder and to explore a variety of other mediums in order to become familiar with their processes.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What is your ultimate goal with regards to learning photography? Your needs will be different if your goal is to capture great shots of the kids/grandkids vs the most amazing landscape photo ever shot vs journalistic street photos.
What kind of equipment do I have or am I willing to invest in? The handiest camera we have - our phones - is compact, readily available and surprisingly powerful. That’s enough for a lot of people so learn to master it. But as great as phones have become they still can’t beat the results from a good DSLR or Mirrorless camera equipped with good lenses and a tripod.
The “click” of the shutter is not the end. Your photos still need a little TLC to pop so think about how you want to edit them and what you will use to do that. Ask your potential instructor what they use as their digital darkroom.
Most of my students do well when we meet at remote locations for a photoshoot - it enables them to experience real life situations and troubleshoot real life photographic challenges. Ask your instructor if they are open to field trips.

Details
Photography lessons are $30/hour either at my gallery in Travelers Rest or my home. I am also available to meet in designated areas for private lessons - pricing may vary if it is a considerable distance. After about 3 lessons I find students have more success if we start going to a location that inspires them and they can experience real life challenges.
I am also available to book for a group lesson or workshop.
For beginner watercolor painting lessons I offer private lessons at $30/hour, or on the last Wednesday of the month I am currently running a beginner class 11-2 for $35 including materials. Contact me for more information.
