About Johnathon
From a young age I recognized the ability of photography to help people feel seen and valued. This was the fuel that aided my career in photojournalism and film-making. After 8 years of newspaper photography I decided to support non-profits and educational institutions. I've worked at Central Connecticut State University, Quinnipiac University, and Sacred Heart to name a few. UNCF, United Way and Americares are also clients. I helped shoot two HBO Documentaries and shared a Peabody Award for my work on the most recent one, "The Newburgh Sting." I'll enjoy teaching you what I know and help you to validate and empower the people and institutions that matter to you.
A friend working at the Brooklyn School of Languages asked me to teach his ELL class twice a week during the summer. I taught there for 5 years.
I have a BA in Communications/ TV Broadcasting from Central Connecticut State University and have a 20 year career in photography now evenly split between fulltime newspaper work and independent photography.

I'll ask for them to share with me images they're proud of and images they'd like to improve. I use a system by which I scale their proficiencies and suggest routes to improve their process.
I've worked with English Language Learner Students as well as High School and College students. I speak at my college and high school as often as they'll have me and have ongoing mentor relationships with young photographers I've had the honor to teach and learn from.
Make sure they have experience in the field and are a good communicator. Just because someone is a talented expert doesn't mean they have the skills to meet you where you're at and help you grow.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should know what they're looking to improve. Ask themselves if they're willing to commit the time to get better at it and if they ya e the money to invest in it. This is a talent I can exercise with a cell phone to great effect but sports and other types of photography require expensive gear. That said, it's cheaper than it's ever been if one can afford it.
