About Olivia
I am currently a Physics PhD student at Harvard University with a passion for teaching and learning. While I have engaged in a wide range of research projects, I decided to focus my work on physics education research to better understand how students learn physics and how educators can better support this process. In addition to my research, I have been a teaching assistant for several introductory physics classes since 2015. In this role I have worked with students in groups as well as in one-on-one sessions. Since 2016 I have also been a private tutor for high school and college students in calculus and physics. From 2017-2019 my passion for teaching led me to a position at an international school in Germany where I taught both high school and middle school math and physics. I'm excited to share my passion for learning by helping students break down complex topics to more relatable and accessible material.
I particularly love the 'aha!' moment students experience when the material suddenly makes sense and they can see the bigger picture of how it ties into their understanding. I am passionate about helping students build their confidence in their own ability to approach and solve more complex problems.
I developed my passion for teaching during graduate school while working as a teaching assistant for a course called "Science & Cooking". I loved how the complex chemistry and physics topics were applied to cooking techniques so that the material became more accessible to students in non-science majors. However, my true first teaching experience was as a young high school student teaching swim lessons to young children and toddlers. Regardless of the topic, I have found teaching someone a new skill or understanding to be the most rewarding work.

When working with a new student, I like to first get a sense of how they approach new problems. This helps me develop an idea for their level of understanding of the material and how they apply this understanding to their own problem-solving process. I also work with the student to pinpoint areas of confusion so that we can then together to create a plan for improving their understanding.
I have worked with students ranging from grade 6 to undergraduates in college with a variety of educational backgrounds.
