About Kevin

I love tutoring physics because it is the best way for me to test my knowlege, learn effective ways to convey that knowledge to others, and to help relieve the stress/frustration students have when dealing with physics. I remember what it was like to struggle and I want to be the help folks need to succeed. Physics is very rewarding once you find a way forward. I graduated with a Bachelors of Science in Physics from Texas A&M - Kingsville in 2014. During my undergraduate studies I was a paid tutor at the university's library for both physics and mathematics. Currently, I am a graduate research assistant at Missouri University of Science and Technology (MST) working in an Atomic, Molecular, and Optical (AMO) laboratory. For the last few years I have been volunteering at the physics department's Physics Learning Center. Students here get help with Introductory Physics I & II. With my help I'll show you how to use I.S.E.E. to tackle your physics problems. First introduced in the University Physics textbooks by Young & Freedman, being able to Identify the problem, Set up equations/relations, Excecute your plan, and Evaluate your results has been the most successful strategy that I've used.

As an undergrad I was refered to the university's tutoring services by one of my professors. Once I was hired and began tutoring I was hooked.

I earned a Bachelors of Science in Physics from Texas A&M - Kingsville in 2014. Since 2015, I have been working towards a Ph.D in physics from the Missouri University of Science and Technology. I have been tutoring physics and mathematics since my early days as an undergad.

About the lesson

With every new student I teach the I.S.E.E. strategy through working a physics problem together. Identify the problem: we review the concepts in the problem statement, list given quantities, and draw a sketch or free-body diagram. Set up: now we write out the equations that link our givens with our diagram. Sometimes you have more equations than needed and so the "# of equations = # of unknowns" tactic is introduced here. Excecute your plan: here you carry out the calculations and find all the unkowns that you are interested in. Evaluate your result: the most important part, in my opinion. Your result must make sense (i.e. object speeds up as it falls not slow down), the units of your answers must be correct (unit analysis is your first and last line of defense in finding errors), and the answer must be consistent.

I've worked with freshmen who had to take intro. physics as part of their general education requirements for their degrees, undergraduate and graduate physics majors, highschool students who wanted to get college algebra credits, and folks returning to college and needed a refresher in both mathematics and physics.

Find someone with enthusiasm, not only for the subject matter, but also for teaching. The last thing you need after hitting your head against a wall struggling with a problem for a couple hours is to pay someone who doesn't find it enjoyable to tutor.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Do I understand the problem statement? "Knowing is half the battle", as they say, and an ambigous problem statement needs to be adressed first. Contacting the professor who assigned the problem for clarification can be tremendous help on its own.

Do I understand the concepts in the problem? If a problem involves mechanics (for example) and you haven't reviewed your mechanics notes or read your textbook, then you're gonna have a bad time. This doesn't include confusion though. Getting help after reviewing your material helps both student and tutor find where the trouble is.

Is there someone else in my class also having trouble with this problem? Study groups in physics classes are powerful tools to not only complete assignments, but to also keep you sane. Plus, if you can work it out with a classmate, then you don't need to spend money on a tutor. Don't forget to also bug your professor! I basically camped out in my professors office as an undergrad.

Have I given this the "ol' college try"? Once you've tried a problem the best you can and you're still stuck, then I'm more than happy to help you. I remember how miserable it was when I first started studying physics. I want to be the help that I couldn't find when I was a younger student.

When I have done in-person private tutoring in the past my rate was $15/hr. I am very lenient with the time constraint though. If we go over an hour by 15 - 30 minutes, then I typically do not charge for the second hour.
