About Katherine
Hello prospective students!
I have been teaching piano for more than 10 years to people ranging from beginner children, to pre-professional musicians majoring in music, and older adult amateurs at schools such as the McGill Conservatory, McGill Schulich School of Music, Merit School of Music, Music Institute of Chicago, and my home private studio. My students have participated in and received top awards in local competitions and examinations.
I am a member of MTNA and my local chapters in Illinois so that I can provide my students with ample performance, competition, and extra curriculum opportunities. I am also a Steinway Educational Partner.
I am delighted to teach the AIM program to those who are intersted in going the extra step with their learning (AIM is a program similar to RCM which gives students graded levels of repertoire, technique, music theory, sight reading, and ear training). I have found that students who participate in AIM examinations with me, excel with note reading and musical comprehension more quickly.
I enjoy most giving students the tools they need to play comfortably and express their goals at the instrument.

First, I set up an interview or trial lesson to make sure the student and I will work well together, and to find out what the student/parent's goals are for taking lessons. After this, we will establish a regular weekly schedule for meeting. Students will be provided with a list of materials to use in lessons (this may include notebooks for taking notes, a metronome or metronome app, flashcards, repertoire and exercise books). For younger learners, I like to use the first official lesson of the semester to set up a list of working goals so that the student always feels like they have a say in their education. After this, we continue with lessons working towards our goals and regular performances set up throughout the year.
Regardless of whether you choose me or not, here is some advice I give to parents looking for a teacher for their kids: '
- always look carefully at the teacher you are selecting, did they major in music performance/music education on the instrument in question at least at the bachelor's level? If not... they likely aren't fully trained enough to teach young musicians. The higher the degree of education, the more experience the teacher has in the field. Also look at their performance experience: consistent high level performing and recording shows you that the teacher really knows the ins and outs of the instrument, and that they can demonstrate and do anything they are teaching you to do
- Don't just choose the cheapest teacher. Often times, how cheap that person's rate is, is reflective of their teaching experience and what the student will get out of the experience. The cheapest person may be setting their rates so low for a reason, and it's important to look at their credentials and ask why.
- Always be clear about what you want to get out of lessons and ask the teacher if they are qualified to teach towards those specific goals. If you want to learn Jazz piano, hire a teacher who specializes in that. If you want to a traditional piano education, look for a teacher who is Classically trained.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
- What is the time commitment you are willing to put towards practicing an insturment each week? While lessons may only happen once, or a couple times, a week, practicing needs to happen on a consistent basis in order to make progress. A lot of people think it's the teacher's job to "make you better," however, it's really a collaboration between the two. The teacher provides you with the tools you need to improve, then it is your job to use and practice them.
