About Amy

I don't actually teach flute and piano - I teach comprehensive musicanship and performance practice THROUGH the flute and piano! Besides the mechanics of flute and piano playing, I give students a solid background in music theory and history, performance practice, and a wide variety of literature. I develop the WHOLE musician. I have taught nearly every age group, from preschoolers to senior citizens, and I have over 30 years of teaching experience from kindergarten to doctoral students. I love helping students find a way to learn that is unique and works for them. I would love to work with you!

I LOVE getting into the thinking process and really figuring out the exact specific point or place a student is having difficulty. It makes me upset when teachers just say "do it again" when they don't really understand what's causing the problem. I really enjoy working through a problem with a student and having them really understand how to play through a passage and avoid that problem in the future!

I always knew that I wanted to be a musician; I never thought about music education until I started at college. I had a phenomenal high school band director and high school flute teacher, and I soon realized that I would not be playing at the level I was without their help. I quickly realized that I wanted to give other students the opportunities that I had been blessed to have when I was in my high school music program.

I am a Rank I certified music educator in the state of Kentucky. I have a bachelor of music education, a master of music in flute performance, and a master of arts in music theory, all from the University of Kentucky. I have a PhD in music theory from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music. I have 28 years of classroom teaching experience.

About the lesson

Our first lesson together is free, giving us a chance to get to know each other better and to give you a better understanding of my teaching style. I ask you to bring in anything you have been working on, even if it's just your band music, and we discover together how making just small changes can lead to big results! We will formulate learning goals as a team and go from there.

I have worked with every age group and ability level! In my first teaching position, I literally taught K-12 music (K-6 general music, 7-12 band). In my second teaching position, I taught K-6 general music in addition to a preschool music program similar to KinderMusic. During my graduate studies, I taught everything from basic musicianship skills to college freshmen, all the way to sight-singing review for doctoral music students. In addition to teaching music at school and private lessons, I have almost always been involved in church music, particularly leading choir and bell choir.

Remember that the best PLAYER is not necessarily the best TEACHER! Just because someone has figured out what works really well for them doesn't mean that they can figure out what works really well for you. Find a teacher that helps YOU.

I recently worked at a band camp (first one in quite awhile!) at a local high school. The first-year flute players essentially hadn't played in a year because of remote learning, and missing your 8th grade year is rough! I really enjoyed working with these four students and helping them get caught up pretty close to where they should be for first-year students - we had a lot to do. They had to learn fingerings for notes, how to play the high notes so they weren't pinched sounding and the low notes so they weren't airy and fuzzy-sounding.
