I am a degreed vocal major and a former Jazz piano perfromance student. I have worked with vocalist on a part time basis since the late 70's and full time as a music educator, performer and composer for the past 20 plus years. I have performed at Carnigie Hall, been commissioned to composed a score for the Sundance Film Festival. Servered as a musical director for a Major Stage production here at the local college performing arts theater, and countless other accomplishments. I studied music theory Instrumentation, Counterpoint, and Composition under Maestro Dr. David Ott(Google him) and Jazz piano under the late Dave Shelander(former Tonight Show pianist as a younger man, and top shelf studio Musician/pianist/bassist in the 70's) And other world class instructors.

First and foremost for me, when I interview a potential new student the number one thing that I am looking for bar none is that does the student come to me already with a "desire" to learn music. I don't place emphasis on "talent" alone per se. However I am looking for students that really want to learn how to play music and are interested in music. I totally structure everything I do around what is it that the student is interested in and what style or styles of music that they are interested in and want to learn. Although I can certainly teach and perform classical music through traditional note reading, I am in no way limited strictly to that. If the student desires, I can teach show tunes, jazz, improvisation, as well as composition and the ability to "pick up" a song simply by listening only. However I must emphasize that this is not done through simple rote or memorization of hand positions on piano. It is taught through a systematic and pragmatic application of universal music theory principles that I myself had to initially learn as a younger student. I prefer to think of my classes as "Music Lessons" with an emphasis on piano or keyboard. I build an extremely strong foundation of music theory in order to understand Musical structure. This goes far beyond simply "reading music", but to a thorough understanding of music theory and in my opinion more importantly the ability to "apply" that music theory knowledge in order to play, improvise, and compose music.
