About Sandra
** Learning piano in one-on-one lessons is a wonderful experience of getting to know someone else as we work together! Because each person is unique and different in their journey, perspectives, skills, and learning styles, I am constantly adapting lessons and materials as needed. I have worked with hundreds of students in a classroom setting and individually. The ages have ranged from 5 years old up to 70 years old! I might have used some of the same books over the years, but the approaches are always unique to the individual!
Hi! I have worked as an educator and tutor for 30+years. I taught overseas in Bogota, Colombia for 14.5 years, as a first-grade teacher and then in music and high school chorus. I became fluent in Spanish over those many years. At the time, I was married to a Colombian, and had two sons who were raised to be bi-lingual. Upon returning to the USA, I taught public school music for the past 16 years, and utilized my Spanish skills to assist in translations, and be an interpreter. I have also tutored high school students in Intermediate level Spanish.
I have a Bachelor's degree in Applied Music-Piano & Voice, and have taught private piano off and on throughout the last 30 years. I also am the music minister, choral director and accompanist at a local church.
Helping another person achieve their learning goals gives me a lot of joy. It is such a reward when I see the light of inspiration and understanding in the eyes of my students. I especially enjoy working individually with students to get to know them better.
When inquiring for lessons please specify the age of your child, because the age span of 5-10 is too broad. There is a significant gap between a 6 yo and a 10 yo., just as there is between 11-17yo!
For young beginners in piano, I only consider giving regular on-line lessons after having established in-person instruction with the student for six months or longer to establish the relationship & the foundations for posture and positioning. Thank you for reading.

I began teaching piano when I was still a university student to a few younger students. When I was living overseas, I began teaching in a bi-lingual school where my sons would attend. I come from a family of many teachers over several generations, so teaching comes naturally to me.
I have a Bachelor's degree in Applied Music, magna cum laude, from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. I studied piano and voice, and have an unofficial minor in psychology.
I have a professional teaching license with the state of North Carolina as a music educator.
I am also certified in English as a Second Language, and am currently studying to take the Praxis exams for World Languages in Spanish.
I am certified in Levels 1A & 1B in Suzuki Piano.
I am certified in Level 1 of Orff Schulwerk music teaching philosophy.
I currently am Music Minister, choral director and accompanist for a local church.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out:

2. Do you have time to focus on learning and studying outside of the lesson time in order to have more success?(Practice time)

1. Let’s Arrange an initial interview to meet each other, discuss learning goals, and answer any questions to see if we are a good match. The cost for an initial 30-minute in-person or online interview is free. We can conduct an online Zoom or FaceTime meeting.
2. If we both agree, the next step is to Schedule the first six to nine weeks of lessons (minimum), or more if desired, to set aside the time in both our schedules for successful learning outcomes.
3. Determine location or platform . 4. Discuss costs and payment method.

60- 65 minute lesson- $75
45- 50 minute lesson- $65

**I believe that the student needs to learn at their own pace and style. If a student is having a lights-on learning moment just as their “time is up” I continue with the lesson and learning process! You have to grab those open moments of their minds.
5. Share personal information: I will need your email address, full name, cellphone number, home address , your child’s full name and birthdate (if the student), type of piano or keyboard used to practice.

5. I will require certain materials to be purchased by the student, and send the information to the parent. I request that each student have a notebook to use for notes, always have a pencil handy at the piano and keep a practice record. Determination of the books and resources to be used will take place after I have worked with the student in the initial couple of lessons. Older Students can provide materials that they are interested in using also.

Sandra is a very talented pianist, who plays for our church, and our older son, Edward, began piano lessons with her at the young age of 5, and she was able to adapt to his interests and energy level for his enjoyment of beginning piano lessons. Details
My rate is usually $75/hour lesson, and $55/half hour, when given on a one-time basis. Students signing up for for a semester of classes will receive a discounted rate based on semester contract and payment terms.
Multiple siblings taking lessons will receive a discount.
Please note: I am willing to work with families and senior citizens according to their need.
Cancellations need to be made 12 hours in advance. Last-minute cancellations will be charged, unless it is due to unavoidable circumstances or family emergency.
No shows & Last-minute cancellations will be charged.
If the teacher misses a lesson, she will reschedule a makeup lesson within the same semester and up to 3 weeks after given semester.
