About Amy
Music is a magic that can change the world. It connects us together more deeply than any other medium.
We all have unique experiences with music, and my goal as an instructor is to help you share these experiences with other people to meet that need for profound human connection. I do so with piano lessons designed specifically for your interests and experience in music and with music theory lessons that help you discuss why specific pieces of music make you (and others!) feel the way you do when you listen to them.
I have a BA in Piano Performance and English Literature from High Point University and an MM (Master of Music) in Music Theory from Northwestern University.
You can find tons of free resources and learn more about me at girlinbluemusic.com
I began tutoring at age 12 in music, chemistry, and math, and I really loved helping people better understand topics they were struggling with. When I was in high school, I student-directed two choirs and taught a music theory course, and that experience (while challenging) sparked my love of teaching. It's so rewarding to help others gain the skills to create their own music and understand music deeply.
During my BA in Piano Performance, I took piano pedagogy (learning how to teach) courses that also involved mock teaching. Additionally, I have 3 years of experience teaching private piano, as well as 12 years of experience teaching in classrooms and private tutoring in general music, music theory, and research in music.
My MM in Music Theory gave me the tools to discuss how we respond to music and research more music that you will enjoy learning.

The first few lessons are a combination of getting to know your interests and experience in music and learning the foundations of healthy technique. For absolute beginners, the first lesson will involve learning a song by ear, and after that, we'll dive into curriculum to set you up for success and have you feeling confident in your practice time as quickly as possible.
I've worked with students of all ages (4–52) as well as students with English as a second language and am open to meeting other kinds of students.
• Make sure the instructor has experience in the genre of music you're interested in. If you're into rock music, don't hire a teacher who has only ever played classical.
• Take the time to get to know your instructor: they're as nervous (if not more) as you are in first lessons. It usually takes 3 or so lessons to truly know if you're a good fit.
• Have a clear idea of your budget. If the teachers you're looking at charge more than you thought, ask if they would be willing to do every other week or some other time table versus the standard weekly lessons.
• Know your availability.
• Treat your goals as desires. We often underestimate the time it takes to learn new skills, so if you want to learn a specific song in a certain amount of time, you aren't setting yourself up for success. But do have at least a few songs you'd like to learn.
I recently attended an online piano recital from one of my favorite pianists, Josh Wright, which was amazing because without the virtual nature of the world, I probably wouldn't have gotten to hear him live!
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
• What music do you love to listen to all the time, no matter your mood?
• What music makes you happy or makes you feel free?
• What music makes you feel understood?
• How much experience do you have with music? Lessons, choir, classes at school
• How much time can you dedicate per week to practicing/studying?
• For pianists: do you have a piano/keyboard at home?
• Do you have a quiet place for practice/study where you won't bother anyone and won't be interrupted?
