About Alyssa

I am a passionate musician and teacher with over 20 years of musical experience who has played piano since the age of 5, guitar since high school, and has enjoyed singing for as long as I can remember. I took piano lessons for thirteen years from my amazing piano teacher, Mary Lou Huff. I received my Certificate of mastery of the Suzuki Piano Literature in 2009 and have earned Top Performer in the Colorado State Music Festival, among other awards in my years of experience. Currently, I am studying at the Metropolitan State University of Denver, pursuing my bachelor’s degree in Music Performance with a concentration on classical piano. I am also a member of the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA).

I believe in providing a comprehensive musical education like the one I received. It is my goal to enrich the lives of children and adults through the love of music, inspire my students to be creative and use their imaginations, help students develop poise and confidence through performance, and encourage each student to reach his or her highest level of excellence. I strive to help students achieve this through a variety of mediums and methods tailored to each student’s individual needs and learning style.

The Suzuki Piano Literature is one of the fundamental elements in my teaching method. “The Suzuki Method is based on the principle that all children possess ability and that this ability can be developed and enhanced through a nurturing environment. All children learn to speak their own language with relative ease and if the same natural learning process is applied in teaching other skills, these can be acquired as successfully.” (International Suzuki Association, (concealed information) Each student begins with Volume 1 of the Suzuki Piano School books and works to memorize and master each piece in the book through practice and performance.

In order to provide a comprehensive education in music, I believe in helping my students develop their sight-reading abilities in addition to training the ear and helping students develop their ability to memorize music. Music theory, ear training, music history, technique, improvisation, and composition are also key components of my teaching methods.

My piano teacher always really inspired me and I learned so much from her. That's why I wanted to pass that gift along to others and enrich peoples' lives with music the way my teacher did mine.

I started teaching at the age of 23 when I was a new mother. It always felt like my calling. However, shortly after I started teaching, I fell upon some difficult times in my life and had to stop teaching for a couple of years.

It brings me great joy to be teaching music again and living my dream!

About the lesson

I like to get to know my students a little bit first and discuss their goals and what they are hoping to gain from lessons with me. From there, I base my teaching approach off of my student's individual goals and needs, using the basic lesson curriculum I have developed as a foundation.

I have worked with elementary, middle, and high school students, as well as adults. Each person I have taught has had differences in their learning styles, personalities, and interests, which is why I feel it is so crucial to adapt my teaching style and methods to each students needs.

Look for a teacher that will encourage you to grow and reach your goals as a musician. A good teacher will be sure to include music theory, history, and technique exercises in her teaching methods. Another important thing to look for is a teacher with a positive attitude who is passionate about teaching and wants her students to have fun.

There are so many precious moments in daily life. One of my favorite moments recently was sharing some pretend tea with my daughter. Watching her face light up as we clinked our teacups and sipped our pretend tea was priceless. It's the little things like this that fill my heart with so much joy.

I teach lessons in my studio (my home) and in students' homes. I will travel up to 10 miles away from my home.

Rates for lessons in my studio are $25 (30 min), $30 (45 min), or $35 (60 min). Add $5 for lessons I travel to.
