About Ryan

Started in 1995, First Conservatory prides itself on providing expert instruction in a nurturing environment. The teachers are also very active performers in professional ensembles which helps their instruction. They are always practicing whcih means they bring that ethic of alwasy improving to their students.

(concealed information)

Seeing students grow over the course of their studies is very exciting! Learning to play or sing well does not happen overnight, yet, as a teacher you see moments in every lesson where the student has made progress. These moments that turn into solid technique are rewarding for student and teacher alike.

Speaking as the director and voice teacher of the Conservatory, I knew that private teaching was going to be a major part of my working life. While I love performing, teaching is where I feel most fulfilled. I had great teachers and they passed the passion and curiosity along to me.

Other teachers at First Conservatory have shared similar thoughts with me.

All of the teachers are very proficcient performers as well as highly dedicated educators. Everyone has at least a bachelor's degree in music with many having masters and beyond. The teachers have a minimum of 10 years experience.

About the lesson

A comfortable student is a happy, receptive student. At the first lesson each of the teachers at First Conservatory takes a little time to get to know the students, their musical background, what kind of music they like. Then, the teacher gets to know the student's playing or singing level by using scales or other excercises. Repertoire that will help the student improve is selected and practice goals are set for the next lesson.

First Conservatory prides itself on teaching a wide range of students. While most of our students are 4-18 we also love teaching adults of all ability levels. Our school-age students range from beginners to very accompolished students playing in the Chicago Youth Symphony Orchestra. Our adult students may be picking up an instrument for the first time, honing skills learned earlier in life or becoming even more profficient at a life long passion.

Look for a teacher who loves to perform. Their energy is infectious and their playing level can inspire better playing from their students.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
How much am I willing to practice?

What are my goals for my playing in 6 months, a year, longer?
